Just a remark on the short wheelbase: short wheelbase makes bike twitchy and less stable. Racing bikes have a short whelbase, good tourers come with a long wheelbase. With panniers on a short wheelbase bike the handling can get quite scarry. A sudden blow of wind can bring you down. Go for a long wheel base if you can...

We were at the bike shop today, and looked at the Giant CRX.

Salesman tried to fit my wife to a XXS frame(38).

She is 5'3 and she hopped on a XS (46.5) and to me it fit her well. She was not stretched at all, relatively upright position.

I checked the equivalent frame geometries between the womens CRX and mens, and there is no difference. Yet the salesman said that the women's version had a shorter wheelbase, which would make it easier to control.

Is it true that a shorter wheelbase gives you more control? I thot that a longer wheelbase would give more comfort.

We went for a short ride on Saturday, she rode my 19" apollo without any problems, and just had the usual saddle sore of a first time rider.

What gives with the bike sizing?

Yes that is what I was thinking about the bike in regards to wheelbase.

I was surprised that the salesman pushed for a shorter wheelbase because my wife explicitly said that she would be using the bike for commuting.

I was further surprised he mentioned that a smaller size would allow her feet to touch the ground while seated (!!!). What gives? Hes not even thinking about a good fit.

I could have misheard him, but my wife likes the colors of the women's CRX, its not black.

The other thing a short wheelbase can do is get the panniers into the back of your heels.
