The Meaning of Christmas!

Good Afternoon Everyone,

It's been a while since I've participated in a Thread on this Forum. I was reading a lot of what was going on, but felt it better to keep my opinions to myself.

Well, I've noticed a lot on religion and beliefs of God and such, so it got me wondering, what is your belief of the upcoming holiday of Christmas?

For me (I am a Christian), I believe that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. I'm not big into the whole gift thing, for me it's more about remembering what Christ did for us and how he wants us to live our lives. I was in the military for a while, so this time of year always brings me back to the time spent away from my family and what I've seen in the world as to how others are treated. We are truly lucky to have the freedom to express our views without any prosecution.

I'm not trying to get a whole God vs. Non-God thing started here, I just would like to see how others perceive the holiday.

One other thing, what would you like for Christmas???????

I used to think that spirit of Xmas was what I felt whenever I found one of my victims walking alone along a dark highway at night, but I always found that the Xmas feeling went away once I buried them. Now I know that Christmas is really about the two girls above showing me, over the course of many hours, just how much they love me and each other.

My beliefs are Christian based and I do feel that Christmas is a time for celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, which I believe did occur, even if it did not actually occur on the date of December 25, 0001 BC. Like Mark, I too spent time in the military but I was lucky and only missed one Christmas with my family . I have been refusing to receive gifts for Christmas for six years now and I give very few because the greed of the merchants has just about ruined this aspect of the holiday. I prefer to ignore all of the "must have" gifts and the guilt trip that the jewelers try to lay on us by saying that "she deserves the very best" when they are trying to hawk a $1000.00 diamond pendant. I beleive that Christmas is all about being with family and freinds instead of giving and receiving gifts. Sorry Wal-Mart, Sears, Kohls, etc .

I'm a Christian too, and I think the meaning is the celebration of Christ's birth, and like what you said, remembering how He wants us to be.

You know, I really thought you boys were just being over-the-top for fun (as you define it)...but tonight I saw part of Larry the Cable Guy's Christmas Spectacular...

It featured two pole dancers, in silver bikinis, with the camera low and pointing up so they could thrust their, um, selves at the audience...it was labeled The North Pole BTW ....during a performance of Kid Rock singing I'm Your Rock & Roll Jesus....with lyrics I don't care to repeat... Don't know about the rest of it, as I changed the channel at that point.

So there's even a Christmas special for you, alienator.

Now I'm off to read The Rise & Fall of the Roman Empire....

I was hoping to get some answers from others that either practice another religion or don't believe at all. What does it mean to them? Is it all about the gifts?

As Crankyfeet mentioned, I try to make it special for those who don't have a means to get gifts for their kids. I think that All kids should have experienced the Splendor of Christmas. I like to get my son involved in things like "Toys for Tots" and other charitable organizations that try to make a wish come true for the less fortunate.

I'm RC : and for me the real meaning of Christmas is the birth of Christ.

But it seems to me that the real meaning of Christmas has been forgotten/ignored in the commercialisation of the season.

The amount of shopping days, when do the sales start, what am I getting for Christmas, who am I going to try to get off with at the X-Mas office party :
seems to me to be the prevailing attitude toward X-Mas.

Not wanting to be a killjoy, we all, naturally, like to have a good time but it we should remember what the real meaning of Christmas is and not get too caught up in commericalisation etc.
