I kind of agree with your statement. I think a lot of people here in the US have forgotten about what Christmas is really about and seem to have embraced the "It's all about me" mentality. And I think that Corporate America has exploited that mentality for their profit. |

His only gift was a song he played on his drum that echoed through the starry night...Pa-Rum-Pa-Pum-Pum-Rum-Pa-Pum-Pum.

"Isn't there anyone who knows what the meaning of Christmas is about?", asked Charlie Brown.
"I'll tell you the meaning of Christmas, Charlie Brown", replied Linus. "And there were shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flocks by night, and lo the angel of the lord came upon them and the glory of the lord shone round about hem, and they were sore afraid, and the angel said unto them, fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a savior who is Christ the Lord. And suddenly there was with the angels a multitude of the heavenly hosts, praising God and saying, Glory to God in highest heaven and peace on earth god will to men. That's the meaning of Christmas, Charlie Brown." |

The true meaning is about the spirit of giving whether it be monetary or of yourself.
Giving of yourself is more difficult and takes time and time is in short quantity. If you consider the Christ story it is all about giving. btw: Alienator we must have receivers also and you are just more of a receiver than a giver but I am sure given the chance you would be willing to give it your all.

I see. Actually, in that case, I would officially be the "videographer" documenting them giving and receiving among themselves. However, with that video in hand and a willingness to share the video with all of mankind, I would indeed be a giver of the greatest magnitude. Such a gift, from me to the world, would truly be the gift that keeps on giving, the gift that helps the whole world come together. ![]() |

I somewhat agree, but you still need to be a willing victim to be scammed. Companies can only sell what you will buy - if no one buys, the company ceases to exist. That is the beauty of capitalism. Linus had it right.

Ah..yes...the "Rational Man" economic hypothesis. I thought that died about thirty years ago with the gold craze. Wasn't it replaced by the "Irrational Man" hypothesis. That one seems to explain current phenomena better.

I think you mis-spelt the above word. Or is that the correct spelling?

No, it's still completely true, it's just that the definition of rational and irrational would depend on the individual. The marketplace is packed with crap that I see absolutely no value in. How else do you explain the Hannah Montana craze, fountain sodas big enough for Ted Kennedy to drop a Buick in them, SUVS the size of busses being driven by 1 person to the McD's drivethru, and t-shirts for 9 year olds that say "Sexy Slut". Some stuff will never make sense.

As we're quoting Peanuts here, here's my thoughts on this thread - "good grief!"
