Thanks for the compliment Pendejo.

And to C'dale girl: If you don't observe the first acronym, the second one might result. Another clue. O=ouch

I watched that time trial on You Tube and I did not see a power meter on his bike. I'm sure he stripped off everything possible for an uphill TT. So when Lance says he did 480, 495, etc. during these climbs, is he calculating it in some other way, such as with his weight, time, distance, etc. and is that an accurate way to determine power?

So Alex, could I calculate my wattage output by timing myself up a known hill, say one in RNP and then putting it into a calculator ?

As long as you know the gradient, a few other variables and the hill climb is reasonably sheltered and wind free day (which several are in the RNP), you can make a reasonable estimate. I would choose the one from bottom of Waterfall Hill turning left to go back into the park heaading back to Audley. It's about 12-15min from memory and reasonably steady - the first part is the steepest.

Hills of >5% gradient are good as the power required to overcome gravity becomes the dominant factor in the equations of motion, reducing the guesswork somewhat due to estimating wind and rolling resistance (which play a much larger factor when riding on the flat).

That's my favourite hill in RNP and the gradient is probably realistic for measurement. Only prob with it is that the measured finish point is at the Gary beach turnoff sign which means that it includes a little bit of flat, but still, you can get a reasonable idea.

Now where's that site with the hill climb data?
