Oh, I wouldn't really call it "stacked", but the Cat 3 field around the Chicago area is pretty good...

No one in particular stands out in my mind or the results of late, but there are several real good riders...

You just need to do time trials more to improve that threshold power...

Seriously, think of the people that have been doing very well during crits, but also are a threat on the TT course... Just look at some of the results.

Interesting, your comment on the quality of the Cat 3 field in Chicago. Here in Vancouver, the Cat 4 field is definitely the toughest and deepest. Consensus is that if you can podium in a Cat 4 race, you could probably get close to the podium, if not on it, in the Cat 3s as well. Lots of reasons for this...

I blame it on this damn power training...

People are riding a lot more. I am doing 12+ hours a week on the bike and just holding my head above water...

My CTL is higher than it has ever been. The personal results are showing, but my results in relation to my peers are about the same.

A comment to your Cat 4 field quality: a lot of people don't make the jump to Cat 3 (or Cat 2, etc) because of:

Team Issues (they have an agenda)
Money payout issues (Rider of the Year payouts based upon field size, etc)
Big Fish in a Small Pond issues (C'mon, they are winning, right...)

I think these are some of the reasons for USA Cycling adopting a mandatory upgrade policy.

I think this is an interesting topic. Here in Gemany we have a mandatory upgrade - and downgrade - policy. It's either 2 wins or 5 * in the first 15 and then you're in the next best class and you have to have at least 3* first 15 to retain your class. As a downside we only have 3 classes (C-beginner and all without success, nationwide approx 5.000, B-not fish nor meat, 200 and A aiming to become Pro's and hot boiling young guys, approx 300).

The pack in C is always large and the speed is extremely high considering there are real beginners in there. If you're not well trained already you'll loose the pack with the first 2-3 laps (mostly crits with 1km laps here) and the motivation is going to hell with that.

I have a FTP of 4W/kg and still didn't make it to the end of a C crit yet (but am getting further with each race ). OK, I'm 40 and started racing only this year but it still proves that even beginners racing - C - is very tough here. At least my motivation still gets me going as I have to prove myself I can do it within this year!

YIPPPEEEE!
This morning I wanted to start a topic about the painfull legs I have for more than 10 days. It won't dissapear but my results are not decreasing, it's only more painfull. Today I wanted to do a 2x30min @ 310 watts but I did 1x60min @ 318 watts!!! My bodyweight is the last days 67.5kg so I am now at 4.71w/kg.

Guys, I've found these FTP listings very interesting..

but

Always felt road races are very close to my heart and that's why I ask/suggest if any idea to built listing around 1 sec/5 sec maximum (neuromuscular power)?

Good (crit rat, day race) roadie needs that Bettini 'snap' too to get rid of 'em and balance between ftp/nmp must be found.

Problematic for many in that peak sprint power is far less of a focus for most not to mention the methods each PM uses to record peak power can give quite inconsistent (and misleading) numbers. SRM OK, PT 5-sec number only (1-sec can be inflated), Polar under reports peak power, ergomo - well it measures one leg only, ibike ???.

I hear ya on the general intent being a track enduro/crit man myself.

20-30 sec power would be closer to the "Bettini snap" IMO.

A little update for me.. it's a few watts (+6), but still quite motivating , especially because I think the previous was a little overestimated (maybe more in the 200-210 range).

It depends.. I feel it's mostly done less than 5 seconds. If you come in a small group and everyone is watching each other, usually one goes and others look whose next more than trying to reach for one that was missed and too quick already.

Maybe it's because I prefer small group over mass sprint. Why share with everyone if it is possible to share it with small group? Then again, why share with small group if you can take it like 'snap'

One question for you guys (and gilrs, of course ). When you calculate (test) your FTP, are you doing it on flat or on hills? I do it on flat because usually I train on flat, but it seems to me that FTP on hills would be higher... on Saturday I went for a ride in the hills, and on a quite long climb I've managed to hold my flat's FTP much easily than on flat itself! Too bad there weren't steady climbs longer than 30' however...

I've done tests on both flats and rolling hills. I think the rolling hills help, because you are changing body position and you do pick up big numbers on the climbs (but you have to keep working on the downhills). For me, it is mental, grinding along for an hour on a flat river bike path is torture. I think real steepies might be tough, you are going top burn a few matches when the grade gets real high. But if you have an hour course that is a mix of rolling hills and flats, I think you will pick up a few watts (@5) over a totally flat course.
