Lots of peeps gone at work Dec-Feb. Out all week, myself included. I haven't hugged the toilet like that for years!
Anyone get a flu shot this year and still got the flu? |

Nope, but I'm getting one in two days. This year's flu season has been muy different, in that, at least here in Arizona, flu cases are still increasing in number, and we're well past the normal flu season peak. The flu shot, this year, is only working against about 40% of the flu variants out there. |

I never get those shots, I believe thats why people get so sick, I'm never on antibiotics, rarely on medicine, and I'm very rarely sick, although I did get pretty sick this year

What alienator said. Flu shots protect you against a few strains (3 strains or something?) that are included in the shot. So, if there are other strains around, you could still catch flu. Every year, so many people in our department get sick from flu in spite of getting shots.

Believe what you want, but your belief is way the hell off the mark. In case you haven't been paying attention to history, the flu has killed many and at times decimated populations. Your belief belies a great many things you've yet to learn about how the human body actually works. You mistake luck with causation. As for flu coverage from a shot, what each year's flu shot is designed to protect against is a bit of a gamble, based on what happened the previous year(s), what is predicted for the next year, and other factors. |

I heard a radio report today that there are 17 strains of the flu virus that were not included in the 2007-2008 flu vaccine and that they are wreaking havoc this season. Even if you got the vaccine, you still need to wash your hands often, don't touch your face with your hands, and don't let anyone with the flu cough or sneeze on you.

Problem I have is that my body gets into a flu like reaction following a flu shot. The end result is not too different to getting the flu.

All true. We've got an epidemic in AZ, at least according to the news. Hospitals are full; patients with more serious illnesses are sometimes being sent as far as El Paso, TX; and a couple facilities, not normally hospitals, have been opened to care for flu patients. On campus, there are more than a few students sporting surgical masks. |

FWIW I think keeping vitamin D status optimum (around 4000 IU D3 per day for me) during the fall and winter is working for me. It reins in your immune system so you don't drown in your own mucus which is the cause of death during epidemics. http://www.knowledgeofhealth.com/re...,%20Vitamin%20D

No shots for me in years. Sleep 8 hours ,eat right ,exercise wash your hands frequently ,spray disinfectant on surfaces ,stay away from sick people and cross your fingers.
So far so good!

well, i just don't think that letting something else fight off sickness is good for you. it doesn't hurt, but i'd rather have my body fight it off

You do know what a flu shot is, right? All it does is make your body develop antibodies to the (inactivated) virus administered in the shot, so that if you do have the active virus come in, your body is already prepared to fight it. The purpose of a vaccine is not to fight off an infection for your body; it is to enable your body to fight an infection when it occurs. |

I use to work with someone who use to be a micro biologist. She was very much against the flu shot. She basically said it was not a good idea to be injected with pathogens.
Found this on the web... flu shot contains inactive or dead viruses. If these viruses were completely inactive, then the shot would never stimulate an immune response. The flu shot contains "attenuated" virus. In the book, "The Sanctity of Human Blood: Vaccination I$ Not Immunization," Dr. Tim O'Shea, a highly recognized authority on the dangers of vaccines, sums up what attenuated really means: "Attenuated means half-killed. The infectious agent is weakened so that it is just below the threshold of being able to trigger an inflammatory response in 99 percent of people. By allowing the implantation of an attenuated virus or bacteria into the body, we have done something nature would never permit. We have violated the sanctity of the bloodstream. We have tricked the immune system into not mounting an all-out response to a foreign agent. If the vaccine's microorganisms were not attenuated, the powers of the natural immune system would join together to repel and attack the invader." |

As I learned a few months ago, not drinking 3 bottles of wine and actually eating while drinking alcohol help ward off that there "stomach flu" too. ![]() And yes, apparently nationally they missed the mark in their predictions with the vaccine so people with the vaccine are still getting the flu, albeit a different strain. |

hoorah ! So many people don't get this. Vaccines are such a elegant tool against disease and sometimes misunderstood. DUh - I get acupuncture, take gobs of vitamins and go to a chiropractor to ward off viruses, and I make all my kids go too. I can't believe how many times I hear that. So -- maybe this is natural/intellectual selection in progress. The great majority of people that are vaccinated to things like small pox and other insidious diseases, that don't have an adverse reaction, get to live and pass genes on to the next tribe, and live to suggest that offspring get vaccinated too - or hopefully live long enough to develop natural antibodies to disease and pass those traits on. Those that don't get the help of vaccines, get to die and leave their legacy and choices in the ground that they are buried in. Let it be man, let it be. Not really -- just trying to make a point... ![]() |
