He also did quite well in the LBL considering he only had a day in, between finishing 10th just behind Bettini. Last year Nibali finished about 30th in the Giro but was riding for Di Luca. I think he may be team captain now in the Giro?

Nibali and Dekker went head to head in the espoirs, and Nibali was considered his equal.

Nibali is also a great tter.

Nibali was third, Dekker second, and Brajkovic won the 2004ish espoir world tt.

Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli finalises Giro picks

Team Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli selected its men for the 2008 Giro d'Italia, which will take place from May 10 to June 1. Gilberto Simoni, who won Corsa Rosa in 2001 and 2003, will captain the squad with the goal of winning the race for the third time in his career. If the 36 year-old climber succeeds, he would become the oldest winner ever of the Italian three-week race.

'Gibo' will be joined by a strong team, composed of experts – Alessandro Bertolini, Niklas Axelsson, Danilo Hondo, Gabriele Missaglia and Daniele Nardello – and younger riders – Raffaele Illiano, Carlos José Ochoa and José Serpa. Leonardo Moser, who broke his left collarbone in the Folgaria's stage at Giro del Trentino, is forced to miss the Giro d'Italia.

"This wasn't an easy choice for me and Marco Bellini," said Gianni Savio, team manager of Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli. "We were forced to leave at home riders who would have deserved to be at the Giro. But this is a hard race, that will start with a team time trial. And we have to do everything we can to protect our leader, so we think this is the best squad for us."

Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli for the Giro d'Italia: Gilberto Simoni, Alessandro Bertolini, Niklas Axelsson, Danilo Hondo, Gabriele Missaglia, Daniele Nardello, Raffaele Illiano, Carlos José Ochoa and José Serpa. (RG)

McGee is riding as well. He got 8th at the Giro clean in the mass doping days. Not a shot this year but would like to see him train again for Grand Tours.

If you want a go at predicting the result, or just want to know more about the race, see the Competition link at the top of the startlist

I don't think Gibo was or is anti-dope. He may be anti-tranfusion and he's certainly anti being doped to the gills and rubbing it in your competitors faces.

I hope so, but Simoni is getting up there in age, like way up there for a GC contender.

Savoldelli will probably find the mountains too hard, but DiLuca will likely be juiced to the eyeballs again. Maybe DiLuca will get things wrong like he did in 2006...

I think I would bet on Simoni finishing in third place.

He will probably be riding support for Lowe but still having thoughts about winning the race for himself. It seems to be a pattern for him at the Giro.

no way, Lowe will not be riding for himself. They might all get freedom, but TD has shown he can top 10 in a GT. Albeit, TD was doing some Disco boosting.

If Tommy D. were healthy I would say he places in the top five. His condition and the state of his back is unknown at this point. It's obvious he was riding support for Lowe at TdG. He did lose twenty seconds on the queen stage. Maybe he is back on track, but I doubt it.

Slipstream will be going for stage victories to justify their invitation, but they also will want someone in contention for GC for at least part of the race. Who else besides Lowe and a shaky TD have they got to rely on for that?
