Aussie cyclists in hit-and-run
From staff reporters
May 08, 2008

AUSTRALIAN cyclists Kate Nichols and Ben Kersten were among about 50 riders
involved in a hit-and-run crash in the Sydney suburb of Mascot.

The group of professional cyclists were riding south on Southern Cross Drive,
just south of Dacey Avenue, witnesses told Fairfax media.

A driver, agitated with being held up, accelerated in front of the pack and then
slammed on his brakes, witnesses said.

Nichols was one of five national team members injured in the 2005 road crash in
Germany in which team member Amy Gillett was killed.

Nichols said the cyclists were going at a good clip, two abreast as they are
required to, when a car pushed them towards the edge of the road.

"The car came past us squishing us into our lane," Nichols said in a statement
issued through Cycling Australia.

"And then the guy went in front of us and slammed on his brakes. He was just a
total moron.

"A heap (of us) came off, but everyone just had superficial wounds and we were
all treated there."

It is understood an off-duty policeman was in a car following the group and the
cyclists took the number plate of the car before it sped off.

There were no serious injuries but most cyclists suffered cuts, bruises, sprains
and possible fractures.

"A lot of people had superficial cuts and grazes, and there'll be a bit of
checking for broken bones and the like, but at this stage it looks like we are
very, very lucky that no one was seriously injured," Cycling Australia
spokeswoman Gennie Sheer said.

it doesnt matter what 'morality' or christianity' says,

scum who exact violence upon others should be removed from the gene pool

(ie castrated and executed)

Um, isn't castrating and executing exacting violence upon others?

But yeah, the moron should be severely punished in the courts.

I read elsewhere that a semi-trailer right behind the group jacknifed, and
almost wiped them out, and cars behind the semi had to swerve.

Good thing they got the number plates.

violent poeple win when GOOD NONVIOLENT PEOPLE DONT
USE PHYSICAL FORCE.

i understand that is a paradox, but that is the way that it is.

violent criminals should be castrated. there are already too many people in
this world.
breeding is NOT a right. violent people should be the first ones removed
from the gene pool.
immigrant criminals should be DEPORTED.
(note the pricks that harrass us roadies are usually 'aussies' - bogans -
who ride in
falcadoors - or some vulgar tasteless 'HOTROD' - cultural scum)

Well, that's a load of rubbish. Iraq is a classic example of your
solution and my opinion is that it has not worked there (or anywhere
else it has been tried). That is why we have a police service: to uphold
the law.

Not a paradox, just wrong.

Interesting logic.

I can think of several other 'classes' that would have an equal claim
for 'first removal' status but go to a totalitarian regime if that is
the society you want.

A black and white solution. Great thinking Einstein.

Bring out the tar bucket. Time to paint some Holden and Ford owners.

If you were in control they would need to be protected.

This nutter spoiled what was otherwise a serious topic.

It isn't that physical force doesn't need to be used, rather it is that
the minimum needed force should be used be 'goof nonviolent people'.

Castration and execution is hardly 'minimum needed force' though!

Not to joke about it, but I feel for the victims of this assault.
Let's hope
that the appropriate charges are made here (eg. dangerous driving,
assault with
a weapon with intention to kill).

Australia is a very civilised country - let's hope that it stays that
way. I don't
think the community tolerates the use of a car as a weapon, and that
the
penalty imposed reflects that.

In a less civilised country, there is no doubt that he would not see
the sun
rise tomorrow. It's a very simple process to locate somebody once you
have
a registration number.

All a rego number tells the authorities is who the registered owner is. Doesn't inform who was actually driving the vehicle or where they are now. A rego number also doesn't predict how much the alleged driver will try to get their legal representation to get them off the charges once the case slowly gets to court or what the verdict outcome eventually is etc ...

The registered owner of the car is responsible for the manor which the
vehicle was used.

If he was not the offending driver then he has to nominate the
responsible party or he accepts responsibility for the offence.

Marcus Einfield case comes to mind.

Oh, I don't know, a sharp knife and a quick cut and it will be over before
they realise. Fairly effortless if you know what you are doing and get
the cut in as soon as they hid the ground and before they start kicking.

I'll skip the barbie afterwards though.

That's very disturbing, yet somewhat educational at the same time.

In the complete absence of anything really sensible in the media regarding yesterdays 'road rage' incident in Sydney, Alan Odds from the newly-formed National Roads and Cyclists Association has issued this press release:

NRCA: Evans inflames an already hostile situation
