I'm not quite typical though, with a starting handicap of a bicuspid aorta
from birth which got replaced ... yadda yadda yadda ....

so while I take my training seriously (like my quality of life depends on it)
I'm not in the 'elite athlete' league (by a long strech).

I understand ... mine was sorta pressing lungs back for size at the age of 10

I'm sorta the opposite, I hit 180 well before my muscles ache

indeed ... despite the leaks it still returns fast, so I'm happy with that!

and stuff like that makes it all worth while don't it

thanks for the info!

Nope, the current fashion is the lower, the better, especially if you have
other conditions.

Beware of quacks offering BP lower drugs. Not so recently, one urned out
to actually increase the overall risk, aka kill people.

Plasma or platelets. My first 50 donations were whole blood.I've been
donating since I was 21 and this is why I know what my resting heart
rate is. I never take any notice of my heart rate at any other time.
And no, I'm not 127, but my dad is 94 now and his dad got to 96, so I
think I've got a while yet.

Can I just say how disappointed I am with you people - I was expecting
somebody to pick up and run with that Monty Python quote much sooner!

Its a long time since I spent time listening to the elite
riders talking about what their coaches told them.

Anyway, for me 220 - 61 = 161, and damned if I can get my heart to go
anywhere
near 161!

But I have known other older veteran riders who did very fast TTs and
they all did manage
faster HR than I ever could. I couldn't even stay up with them when
riding close behind
on a flat road. Some were 10 years old than me, 50, and they'd get 1:02
for 40km,
and I'd only get 1:08 maybe.
One would do 11 mins for 8k, I'd do 12:30.
Neil Stephens was on holiday from Europe and did a 9:30, much faster
than the club's seniors,
but you'd expect that from a pro.
But one guy who was 10 years older and a faster time trialist than I
ever was hated being in bunch
races with me and the others; he couldn't handle the changes in pace and
attacks.
Then of course there were others who barely stayed with the bunch in
race, but at the
end they'd easily sprint past everyone.
Cyclists come in all shapes and sizes and with much different
physiologies.

But I have only seen about 2 veterans still riding out of the 50 or so I
saw regularly
some 16 years ago.
Some of the club veterans now racing were seniors 16 years ago, and
they are now as fast I once was, and if i rode with my ghost of 42 I
couldn't
keep up with myself.

The older ya get, tha betta ya woz!

Naah, this is my old (as in his age) GP came out with this last visit.
Specialists wants to double my meds, but GP can not see the reason. I
worked out it is my specialist that gives me high blood pressure (but
still under 220-age) and the GP relaxes me (almost 220-2xage {:-).

Given that I chased up on some other recent "medical news" the specialist
was spruiking on about and found out that this new technique he wants to
try actually increased the risk of people dying, I've decided that the
best thing is to reduce my BP by findng a new specialist.

Personally, if you're swinging your leg over a bicycle and going for
a ride daily, then you're probably doing yourself much god.
