replace the 12 cog on a 12/25 with an 11 cog ? ? ?? ? ? ?

You will need to get an 11t lockring for use with the 11t cog. I've done something similar. But I
dropped the 14 for 11-12-13-15-17-19-21-23-25. I done it for 2 DA 9 speed cassettes & have had
absolutely no problems. It provides for the smallest ratio jump. No problems shifting. But on
occassion wish I had the 14 for a tighter shift when I'm on flatter stuff.( Really want a 10 speed
with 11-25. When I'm only on flat stuff just use the 11-23. I've also used the 12-23 for winter
riding.) I ride the hills alot & like the 11 for the long downhills. Why do you want the 11 without
the 12? You will find yourself in the 12 much more than the 11 & mainly the 13-15.

You will hear I'm sure from several who will tell you & make judgements etc "you don't" need the 11
etc. And in theory ones doesn't but for my use with 650 wheels I've really been happy.

Yeah, but how often are you really in the 11t? or even 12t for that matter? Downhills and sprints.

the 13, to get the 13. Also need a smaller 11t lockring.

The wheel diameter makes a huge difference. With a 32-369 (17x1 1/4 Moulton) a 56x11 = about an 86"
gear. Even a 10T only brings you up to the mid-90s.

Jeez, it's only a measly two-tooth jump, why wouldn't it shift well?

Got it backwards (or maybe upside down!) from the 11 to the 14 is a _down_ shift, from 14 to 13 is
an _up_shift.

The 11-13 jump is pretty big to have on the high end. I'd be more inclined to ditch the 14 rather
than the 12.

thanks...i will try the 11-25 by dropping the 14....

i am aware that i should be spinning more, i am aware that c boardman said theres no need for an
11....im also a cat 2 (i know, big deal)...and like to pop my shifters all the way up to the 11
sometimes, but also like 23/25 for climbing....

Maybe which one they will use more is not the question. On our club ride, if I didn't have an 11, I
might get dropped on the downhill sprint on Highway 84 into La Honda. At best I'd just be sitting on
and spinning. I use a 11-25.

The 11 sits into the 12 and not the 13. You need 11,12,14.

Another aspect not yet covered: there are hubs compatible with the 11-tooth cog and there are some
which aren't. See Sheldon Brown's page on cassette for details at
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html Basically, the 11-tooth-compatible hubs are not splined until
the end to allow for the small cog.

Regarding the "huge" jump at the upper end, it depends on how you see it. I have done simething
similar with a custom cassette: 12-14-15-16-17-19-21-25-32. My idea: I always use the cogs between
14 and 21, so the gap between 12 and 14 becomes significant only in a 1% downhill or if I have a
strong wind in my back. I have no problem shifting from 12 to 14, but I shift in friction.

So if the original poster rarely uses his (her?) cog smaller than 13, than it's an OK gap. But if
the poster wants to use it often, than a 12 would be better suited.
