I just broke my 2nd road frame in 4 years... yesterday. A Specialized S-Works M4 Road. It broke at the joint of the chainstay and seatstay where the rear casette is. I never actually heard it crack, and was riding rather slow at the time. But, I heard my rear wheel rubbing against the frame which sounded as if the brakes had been misaligned. My previous frame was a Cannondale, CAAD3 or 4.
I'm starting to look into titanium frames (is this my best bet?) and also custom sizes (Seven, Serotta, etc).

I am 6' 5 1/2" (~2 m) and 225 lbs. (102 kg). I'm sure there's a lot of us "big folk" who wish they could find a mass produced bike that was just right. And that would last. Or, perhaps its just me. Has anyone had other craftsmanship problems with any of their frames or components? I also have a set of Kysrium SSC wheels, but they've held up just great. I was initally worried about them, because they are some of the lightest available.

I love the Sevens, but if I were a Clydesdale and needed a custom fitted bike, I would ride a Rivendell. They are made by the former designer for Bridgestone and they are beautiful, classic steel frames built to your specs (sounds like you may not be into steel). Anyway-there is definately no problem with craftsmanship, and I believe they may tout the same warantee that Bridgestone did (lifetime, until they went out of bussiness). I have jumped mine (BUI-Bicycling under the influence) and had no problems at 210lbs (course, I'm 5'6"). They are certainly worth looking at and in my opinion are some of the coolest looking bikes around

good luck in your quest- maybe the Clydesdales ought to unite and start a company of their own
Cheers

Talk to the folks at Moots Titanium Cycles. They are wonderful people and will tell you straight up if their products (or any titanium bike) is right for you.

I'm 5'11" and 235 and - so far - have had no problems with either my road (2002 Bianchi Imola - steel frame) or mtb (2004 Kona Hoss) - they are pictured in my avatar. Of course the mtb is built for big guys (thanks Kona!) and I ride conservatively on my Bianchi (no jumping, etc.).

I weight 270 and am 6'2". I have a Carbon TCR with 4000 miles on it. It is a great bike and Giant has a lifetime warr. on there frames. I also am pretty easy on my frame as well....

It is probably not a recomended bike for me but it does well I think....no problems yet...Knock on carbon....

Magnus Backstedt is about your size, he rides a custom titanium Bianchi (or at least he used to)...

2 frames in 4 years is pretty amazing, and you are not that big. Are you doing something funny in your riding? Had your bikes been crashed?

I am a little smaller, but still large (6'1" 195lbs), I ride a stock Giant aluminium frame, and really like it.

I've never crashed on a road bike. The first frame, Cannondale (my first bike), I bought used. so, its possible it was crashed. It was cracked on the top tube near the seat post. I could hear it creaking with every pedal crank. But, this didnt start occurring until a year into riding it. I saw the crack growing, so rather than waiting til it disengaged itself, I replaced the frame with the Specialized and transferred most components (upgraded to Ultrega 9 at same time). Nothing funny about how I ride, I think, I just do your normal club-style rides. 40-50 miles on wknds. 20 on weekday mornings (1-2 a week). Occasional century. The Specialized bike broke completely, I'll try to get a pic soon. the chainstay completely unattached at the rear wheel dropout.

Magnus won Paris-Roubaix on a Bianchi Ti... I'm researching that option. I'm assuming part of the problem is that my bike(s) have longer tubes, due to my size, and thus can't handle the stress as well as "normal" bikes.

Specialized has a warranty on their frame, which I'm persuing now. But, I'm still considering getting a 2nd road bike, well, mostly... just because. The Cannondale had a warranty but I wasnt original owner. The M4 frame was only $250 at Supergo so I grabbed it.

I'm 6'3" about 80 kg. I broke my frame in the same place. A framebuilder said it was badly built in the first place, which I believe. The joint was not welded properly.

I have got a lightweight custom built aluminium frame now with a lifetime guarantee now. I have had steel before with no problems. I think I was just unlucky, but I have heard the join at the rear derailleur is a point where cracks often occur. The lifetime guarantee turned my head.

No more Italian frames for me. They might look nice but I don't know about quality..except maybe a Tomassini..now there is a nice bike..with Campag bits of course!

well im 6'3 and i weigh 165 pounds so i reall y dont have a problem with breaking things the only problem i have is wind resistance since im tall

5'8" tall, 200 lbs and counting down the weight since I have taken up cycling. I started cycling in May of this year and I was 215 lbs:eek:. Its easy to lose weight when you enjoy the exercising!

I'm 6'2" and weigh 205-lbs - I used to weigh 240-lbs but after 6-months of cycling and roughly 4,000km I'm a bit lighter. I ride a Fuji Altair2 aluminium road-bike with no problems so far...

Looks like it mostly just me breaking bikes. I've acquired a few new nicknames from friends ... ("bruiser","big engine"). Anyway, I dropped the Specialized off for warranty, I should have an E5 coming my way by next week.

I'm 6'5" and 210 pounds (probably closer to 200 this late in the summer, I never weigh myself). My previous road bike was an older 62cm Trek 2300. Carbon main tubes with aluminum rear triangle, BB and head tube. I rode that bike for well over five years with no problems. I'm currently riding a 63cm Cannondale CAAD5, which has been fine so far but I just got it this spring. My MTB is a custom steel frame that I've been riding for over three years now. I certainly don't anticipate any problems with it.
