There are a range of stages available, but, due to the size, I think you need to buy the DVD from TACX

try http://www.tacx.com or
http://www.i-rides.com

I'd need a triple before trying the Alpe d'Huez! I have an I-magic, but not the legs or cardiovascular system!

What kind of biking feeling do you get from using this trainer ? Does it give a road like feel ? I have a magnetic trainer already -- I guess the Tacx I Magic would feel the same ?

Do you think you get accurate power measurement results from this trainer?

The computrainer is discontinued -- is that right? So my only choice to get for a trainer of this type is the I Magic?

I have the Excel which is really nice and not bad on price, the Grand Excel you can hook up to your computer and get graphs etc of your progress and as far as I know that one is still available. But if you want a Virtual Reality trainer then the I Magic is the only one I know of.

I have a Tacx Excel (amongst other units) it doesn't give a road like feel. Not sure if the I-Magic units uses the same resistance unit.

Neither of them give accurate power measurements.

if you want a trainer that allows you to view graphics of circuits and race against others including on-line, then you could try the CycleOps POwer Trainer +, gives a much more road like feel. see http://www.power-tap.com/products/electronictrainer+.htm

Ric, do you know how the CycleOps electronic or fluid trainers ride? Can you get the electronic versions in the UK?

i have an electronic one myself. it feels very nice. i've not used a fluid version

yes, i'm sure i can get an electronic version for you. it comes in two models -- one you can attach to your PC and a standalone version (which is upgradeable at a later date)

I believe there is an upgrade unit for the (grand) excel. The roller / brake unit at the rear is the same design as far as I know.

Oops...Ric just said that!

If you cycle on extremely smoooooth roads, you'll be at home on this trainer! The transition in braking as you change gradient is very smooth.

As regards the power measurement, there are a number of other threads dealing with this already, so you should be able to hunt them down. I think consensus is that they can be as much as 10-15% inaccurate. As far as I'm concerned, if the inaccuracy in more or less consistent, I'm happy! My inclination is to use the power measurement as a guide to effort - and yes, I am into my number crunching!:D

I know that I have a turbo trainer for Xmas and was thinking of getting TDF to train in front of but these sound good. While I doubt that I have the Imagic trainer for Xmas do you know if it is possible to just simply watch the DVD. I know I would not get the feature of resistance due to the connectivity with Tck gear but just having a ride up the Alps would be awesome with my resistance crancked right up!!
Thanks in advance

I have the i-Magic. I've heard (well seen really) lots of threads on the video add-ons available. This really gets me angry - because all we get is 'WOOLY INFORMATION' about where they are available from - please ignore any idiot who says "Try the Tacx website" - they aren't available there.

Sounds good though doesn't it? Shame it's all a bit badly handled by Tacx themselves. :(

You may rejoice to the fact that it all is due to be released in December by tacx when they release their new virtual trianer the I-magic fortius.
I`m thinking of getting one however my only trainer experince is with an old entry level tacx and basically more than 30 minutes on that one and I´ll fall asleep. That said I´ll gladly use a spinnerbike for three hours. The hometrainer has such a dead fell to it. You guys with I-magics how do they compare to cheaper hometrainers in feel?

Is this compatible with my i-Magic then? And if so, will I be expected to part with more cash? I already parted with £400 with the promise from Tacx that 'this is just the beginning' - If i knew I'd have to pay for thend, I probably wouldn't have bothered. Thanks,

Col.

Tacx have now made available a small but growing collection of Real life Video rides that are compatible with the i-magic & their new Flagship trainer the Fortius. You can buy a DVD stage via www.tacx.com for €29 including free world wide postage.

This thread is about l'Alpe-d'Huez & this can be found towards the end of the Alpine Classic DVD which takes the road from the top of the Télégraphe over the Col du Galibier, down the 40km long Col du Lautaret & then up l'Alpe-d'Huez (about 85km total). You can choose where you want to start & finish so if you wanted an easy ride you can simply do a descent or perhaps a tt up l'Alpe-d'Huez for a bit of LT training?

There is more info on my site & to purchase go to the tacx site & navigate to VR trainers - Real life Video.

Regards Phil
