What cranksize to use?

I have question about cranksizes. I'm a 5'6" rider at a 155 lbs. My inseam is 30". I have a couple of mountain bikes, one with a 170mm crankset and one with a 175mm crankset. I buy small frame sizes, because the stand over height is better for me. I can ride both equally well, but seem to be able to climb better with the bike (which happens to be 3lbs. lighter) with the 175mm cranks. Does this make sense? I thought the shorter cranks with my height would allow me more power transfer for climbs. I'm getting ready to upgrade, but I'm not sure what size crankset will perfom better. Any input would be great.

The longer the leaver, the more force that is applied to the pivot point. In this case, the longer the crank arm, the more torque that is applied to the chain rings. Longer crankarms offer better torque on hill climbs.

People with shorter legs can opt for shorter crankarms as it is easier to maintain a comfortable pedal rotation. Crankarms that are longer can feel ‘clumsy’ for shorter riders.

If the longer cranks get you up hills easier, and your legs feel like they are spinning comfortably, go with them.

Cheers,

Yep, Juba's the source!

I'm the same size as you are and I switched from 175's to the 170s. I like turning more so I actually prefer the shorter arms. But for longer rides on flats, the 175s are much better.
