Why don't you go to a restaurant and enjoy a fine dinner, then skip out
without paying the check. Sure, you don't get a receipt, but it's not
like you're *stealing* or anything. Oh, wait. . . .

so long as you're running on public roads and not using their aid
stations, that doesn't sound like a very good analogy.

You're also taking advantage of the fact that they've paid money for
permits to close the roads, paid for traffic control personnel, measured
the course for you, arranged for splits to be given, etc.
