What is happening to UK Walking?

I am confused.
That in itself is not difficult to achieve but I don't like being
confused without knowing why.

I have read uk.rec.walking and have also been advised (by Google) to
try uk.rec.walking (beta). All ok so far. HOWEVER, when I look at UW
I can read various messages with various titles (this would seem to be
normal). When I read UW(beta) I can read messages with various
titles.....So what is the problem...well some messages on one do not
appear on t'other - not just because of delays in updating, unless
updating takes many days - but because they, the messages, just do not
appear. So which do we use?
I'm curious to see whether this message posts to both groups too.
Maybe those using a news reader do not have this problem, who knows.

Can anyone please satisfy my curiosity and relieve my confusion?

Cheers,

UK.Walking is fine, however the beta version of Google groups still has
some problems - that's why it's a beta, not production.

Personally I'd go mad trying to work Usenet via Google - it's great for
looking up an answer from a 10 year old posting, but for reading a group
in semi-real time, it sucks .. why not get yourself a decent newsreader
(free agent, or even (spit) Outlook Express) and access the group via
one of the free NNTP (news) servers which are out there? I know walkers
are masochists, but you have to set limits somewhere. 8>.

Just checked Google Groups and Google groups advanced search, it has not
changed. No mention of urw(beta)

Google (along with all web based newsreader) is/are is IMO a cr*p method of
reading newsgroups.

Google are updating their interfaces to compete with other web based
companies, Google Groups Beta is a trial to improve the 'experience'
allowing you to watch, update, tag your threads etc....

Personally I prefer using Knode or Gravity for newsgroups both are
offline viewers and I get to read the groups at my leisure and kill file
trolls/spam.

I use Agent which has very good killfiles.

Almost any news reader is better than the M$ rubbish, mainly because
they encourage top posting and don't have conforming signatures.

I used to use Agent but it took offence to a fairly exotic system I
have. Also I don't use a lot of features it has. That said, it's a good
client.

Well OE does OK for me. :)
I think the most important thing is the News Server you use, some are
hopeless others are good, one of the best is the free news server
news.individual.net. You go to their web site
http://www.news.individual.net/ and register then they send you the
passwords etc and then you configure your news reader. They have good
instructions on configuring most news readers.

I'd go along with this. Some of the ISP news servers are
complete penc. The only limitations on the German server are:
lack of binary groups; lack of any group whose name starts with
the word 'free'. This means that the freeserve.* heirarchy
aren't carried despite numerous requests, which is a pity because
only rarely are they Freeserve-specific and they're usually worth
looking at.

Thirded. Very reliable and fast server for text NGs.

And again. I switched to it recently, & found it a million times better
than the blueyonder server.

That's why I still use my old ISP, BT, for those that the German server
doesn't carry, mind you BT and their lousy Ng coverage were the reason I
went with the German server in the first place.

LOL.

And I thought I was slow! It's been the best ng server for over 9 years;-)

Many thanks to all for their advice, which I have now (partially) taken and
started using my ISP's USENET facilities via Outlook Express. I know it's
not necessarily the program of choice but will satisfy me for the moment.

That's interesting. Your headers confirm that you are indeed using
OE. But your sig isn't broken, ie the space after the '--' has not
been removed. Does this mean that M$ have mended their software?

Quotefix fixes that, iirc, along with several other buglets.

In version 6 of OE, I think.

However, I've just checked one of Paul Saunders' posts, since I've
noticed before that he always has a broken sig. He is also using OE6,
so there must be more to it than just the fact that OE6 no longer
strips off the space. Maybe you also have to set the 'hyphen-hyphen-
space' up correctly in the sig file?
