Atkins Casualties ?

I sometimes read the Atkins negative propaganda posted here in this NG.
Scary stuff if it is true...

Do you are anybody you know been harmed by the Atkins diet?

I would like to hear some true stories. How many people have died of
ketosis?

It seems to me being obese is more unhealthy than a few months in ketosis.

Thanks,

Well, my cousin's history teacher's boyfriend told me about this guy who
got hit by a bus on while crossing the street. He was on his way to buy
pork rinds and bacon.

Does that count?

Well, I'm loosing 20lb per month now and soon I expect to be back at my
Junior High weight. I probably feel better now than I did back then. At
least the kids aren't picking on me for being chubby like they did back
then. I'm a lot taller now too, so I'll just be leaner and meaner when I get
back to that weight.

I feel great on Atkins and even my Software Engineering is moving along
faster and easier.

Dietary ketosis is not harmful.

It's not ketosis so much as eating below a certain threshold of carbs that
seems to worry some folks. Yet I'm aware of no studies indicating that we
*must* have a certain number of carbs each day in order to thrive.

I still think a huge point of confusion for people who aren't familiar with
this WOE is carbs vs net carbs. If they added back in the carbs from the fiber
we're (supposedly) all eating with all the vegetables we're eating, that would
probably calm some of the alarmists. But since net carbs aren't taked about
much outside of the low-carb community, that's probably where some ill-informed
nutritionists get the idea that we don't eat vegetables.

If he was compelled by the book to do so, and that was his only reason for
going to the store, I would say Yes.

I think Mu is harmed by Atkins, in the sense that the Atkins diet actually
makes sense, whereas the 2PD makes no sense. So, yes, I know someone
harmed by the Atkins diet. While we're at it, the bread industry isn't
doing so hot now, which the bread manufacturers have said is partly due to
Atkins. Therefore, they are also being harmed by the Atkins diet.

We all know that the Inuit sneak have been sneaking carbs on the side for
generations ;-)

Sadly, I think ignorance runs much deeper than that. I am regularly
shocked to find that people don't even really understand what a
carbohydrate is and what foods contain them. Never mind simple vs.
complex, gross vs. net, digestible vs. indigestible. Don't they teach
this stuff in junior high anymore?

Did they ever? I don't remember anything about "nutrition" in school, but
I went to a bad high school anyway.

They didn't teach is as far as I can remember. Good thing, too, because
they had most of it wrong anyway.

Well... There was this one woman. She lost over 90 pounds on
Atkins. She followed a regular exercise program to keep her
figure in shape and before long she was back in the dating
circuit. She met this great guy, who'd lost 100 pounds, also
on Atkins. They started dating and after a few months it
"clicked" and they decided to get married. One day as she
was crossing the street to update her wedding registry that
woman was killed by an obese hit-and-run driver who was high
on Twinkies. The prospective groom was so distraught that he
committed suicide.

THE ATKINS DIET HARMED THESE PEOPLE.

Reading hundreds of pages that most poeple cannot comprehend is sensible,
huh?

I don't eat commercial bread at home and it has nothing to do with Atkins.

no one's going to live forever, so what does it matter?

Good question. Four years ago I lost 50 lb. (220 to 170) on "Protein
Power", similar to Atkins without all of the hype and commercialism. 170
lb. was a plateau and to maintain weight I had to stay with Phase II (On
Going Weight Loss). For the past 30 years I have had annual lab tests for
SMAC (was once SMAC 8 but I believe it is now around 30) and CBC. A few
readings were always borderline or departed slightly from average but were
consistent for me before, throughout, and after the weight loss experience.

Last year I experienced congestive heart failure. I was able to avoid
bypasses but had a few of my arteries reamed out and now have four stent
implants and I need to take anticoagulant and statin drugs . The
cardiologist recommended I switch to a weight control program managed by a
local hospital. It looks almost exactly like the South Beach program. I
have since regained 20 lb. and can maintain that fairly easily. But to lose
weight I need to restrict portion size to reduce calorie intake which is
difficult.

Congestive heart failure due to inefficient heart function may be due to
genetic factors, narrow arteries, arteries hardening with age, plugged up
arteries, atrial fibrillation, defective heart valve, and probably many
other factors and the PP/Atkins program may not be a factor. But no way
will I ever go back to a high cholesterol eating regimen just in case it may
be a contributor.

No, but I know four "health-conscious" people who have been eating
low-fat for about 20 years who all have diabetes now.

Sure, all those people who were alive before the agricultural
revolution, for thousands and thousands of years, who just ate meat
and fruit and vegetables and nuts, deprived of a bread and pasta free
diet. What an awful life!! How ever did human beings get along?

You know what happens to people who don't eat bread? I saw this PBS
special once about the Amazon Indians. They had a 70 year old man who
climbed 4 trees a day.

How inhumane, to make old people do things like that. Why, dammit, I
have the right to sit and get fat and have my kidneys and pancreas and
heart and everything else quit on me at 60. It's my god given American
right, isn't it? And if I enjoy the gifts of civilization (such as
bread) golly, maybe I won't end up like that poor old man I saw on
PBS. Maybe if I eat bread, I won't have to climb four trees a day when
I'm 70.
