The 11th annual running of the Alpenrose Six Day started Monday June 23. There was a larger turn out
of teams then any previous year allowing the Six riders to be separated into 2 fields.
The first event was a 2 mile Madison Pursuit. This is used to seed the 2 fields. The team of
Portland local rider Peter Drake with visiting New Zealand rider Adam Curry riding for Velocraft
demonstrated that they had speed to spare by setting a time 11 seconds faster than the second place
team. The next 5 teams were separated by only 4 seconds. Mikkel Bossen and Mark Ginsberg (Trek-Bike
Gallery/Team Oregon) set the third fastest time despite Ginsberg having a flat tire which kept him
off the track to make the wheel change.
The B field Madison was very competitive with the Gregg's team of Luis Bernhardt/Louella Holter
winning by going off the front near the end and gathering more points. Norrene Godfrey/Dean Tracy
Team Rubicon/LAF when Tracey was forced to withdraw due to pain in his recently broken hand.
The A field Madison started off very fast. A split occurred in the first portion of the race with
the first 3 placed teams riding away. The remaining 3 teams were separated for the majority of the
race until the lapping 3 teams eventually gathered all the teams back together. late in the race the
Drake/Curry (Bikecraft) team went off the front but missed taking a lap by a thin margin at the end
of the race.
