Road shoe with MTB shoe walking amenities?

Apologize in advance if this is a stupid question...

Is there such a thing as a road shoe that is also semi normal to walk in? Every road shoe I've seen (including my current pair) causes you to walk directly on the cleat when unmounted. Many mountain bike shoes have rubber treads that extend beyond the cleat so you can actually walk in them. Is there such a thing as a road shoe that also lets you walk? I don't want to give up the rigidity and power transfer aspects of the road shoe, but also would like to be able to walk normally for short distances when not mounted. I don't care about aero qualities so much. I'm not that good...

If you aren't concerned about aerodynamics or a bit of extra weight, just get MTB shoes. For a given price range, they aren't any less rigid than road shoes.

Shimano, Lake and Diadora (among others) used to make "touring" shoes, which were essentially road type cycling shoes with a recessed cleat (or mountain bike shoes without the huge, overkill hiking lugs on the bottom). I don't know if they still make them or not but I'm sure someone must.

thanks meehs, that sounds like the type of shoe I'm trying to describe. I don't need to hike mountains in the things, just want to be able to walk a little bit when needed without being paranoid about screwing up my cleats and looking like something stuck up my bu%$. I'll look into the touring shoe thing.

I have a pair of Shimano touring shoes. They're great for those around town trips where I'm off the bike as much as on it, but they aren't as stiff as regular road or mountain shoes. There's always going to be some trade off for walkability.

Both my diadoras and my sidi MTB shoes are just as rigid as any road shoe i've ever seen. The sidis are the exact same as the road shoe in the same price range...with rubber lugs on the bottom.

Have a look at shoes for mountain bike or cyclocross RACING. They'll be a bit costly, but you won't find a stiffer shoe you can also walk in.

What's the deal with lugs on MTB shoes anyway? I understand the tread on the sides and rear, but screw in metal lugs? What do those do?

If the ground you are racing on is soft, the studs help you with traction if you have to carry your bike.

I use Speedplay Frog pedals (which are very light and use recessed cleats) on my road bike and high end Sidi mountain shoes which are very rigid but have those treads which make them fairly easy to walk in. I also use some Shimano touring shoes that are even easier to walk in but have alot more flex and I notice the difference betweem them and the Sidi's. It is a tradeoff and depends which bike I'm riding and how important it is to go a little faster.

mountain bike shoes are your only option. i haven;t seen any road shoes that we comfy to walk in. however, mountain shoes only come with the spd 2 hole cleat sole. so your pedals and cleats must be spd compatable. (any spd, crank bros pedals, etc)
