Practice for Around the Bay - best route to Geelong

My partner and I are doing another practice ride from St Kilda to Queenscliff this weekend, the first time we're going that way around the bay. We did St Kilda to Sorrento last weekend.

Anyone got any tips on the best route to take, how to get there from the city and if we're allowed on the Westgate bridge on Sunday morning? Are there any odd spots to be aware of?

No. you'll have to go through Footscray...imho, it's a sh*t ride down the Geelong Rd anyway. You're better off going to Sorrento again.

Why's that? We're giving this way a go as that's the direction of travel on the day and we'd like to get a feel for the time involved....

Dead road, lots of traffic, no other cyclists and just plain boring!

If you are using the ride for training, it won't matter where you go as long as you get the km's up. Also, there really isn't any need for a reconnaissance ride, as there will be 1000's of people doing it on the day. But if you feel you need to do it to estimate the time, you'll have to take off the time it will take you to get through the western suburbs, coz on ATB Day, you'll just be going straight over the bridge.

Once I did a ride to Torquay & back, and I must agree; the Geelong Freeway is not the sort of ride you would do for fun. If you really wanna give it a go, you would have to go along Footscray Rd, thru Williamstown or Sunshine, Queen St thru Altona, Point Cook Rd thru Pt Cook, Sneydes Rd to Werribee & join the Freeway after you've been thru central Werribee. I found that the freeway was very windy, noisy, lotsa trucks, dirty, and plenty of crap on the road that may give you punctures. Take LOTS of water too, long gaps between servo's. Lonely too. Go with yer mates. As ed073 said, its best done as part of ATB, cos you get to ride on more of the Freeway, and the Bridge, also theres lotsa other people around.
