Bicyclist Allegedly Strikes MN Officer

Austin, MN - 7/10/2003

An intoxicated bicyclist faces obstruction charges after he hit an Austin police officer with his
bike early Wednesday, police said.

The officer was out of his car on a traffic stop about 1:30 a.m. when a 36-year-old Blooming Prairie
man began riding his bicycle around the officer, Chief Paul Philipp said.

The cyclist was shouting obscenities and asking the officer, "What are you going to do, arrest me
for obstruction?" the chief said.

The officer reported that the man began riding "figure-eights" around him and hit the officer with
his bike, causing the officer to fall against his squad car. The impact also threw the bicyclist
over the handlebars of his bike and onto the bumper of the car.

The cyclist was arrested -- for alleged obstruction.

Philipp said his blood-alcohol level was 0.19 percent, almost twice the legal limit for driving in
Minnesota.
