Please excuse my non-techie question, I'm going to try and describe my problem the best way that I know how but my formal cycling terminology is severely lacking (sorry, I'm trying to learn though)!

I used to LOVE to ride my Specialized Allez Elite, now I don't. I've just put over 1,000 miles on it and I noticed that the gears do not shift as smootly and certain ones are more difficult to pedal in than they used to be (on the exact same roads, weather, etc.). I took my bike in for a tune-up last week. After riding it again, the problem did not go away. I took it back to the shop, they played around with the cables, cleaned and lubed the chain, etc. but I'm still having the problem. Is there something that I can try at home so I don't have to drag it back to the shop again? I want a new bike already and I've only had this one for several months!

This is my first posting on this forum, so I hope it works fine.

Problems with gear shifting can generally relate to a few things:

1) physical condition of derialeur(s) and their adjustment.

2) physical condition of cable(s) and their adjustment

3) physical condition of cogs/chainrings as well as the chain.

From your brief decription, it's hard to work out what is wrong. However, it sounds like a need for readjustment of deraileurs/cables that are normally required especially with season changes. If mechanics at the bike shop are knowledgeable and experienced, the problem should be rectified easily.

If you have not mechanically damaged your deraileurs and/or cogs or chain, and if you really like to do it youself, I would suggest to get the literature (user manuals) for deraileurs first, and then undo your cables, clean and lubricate them, and set up your deraileurs following the manuals.

When I was building my last bike, all components (Shimano) came with useful manuals. Check if you can get them (or download them). Good Luck.
