gRim11x:

I was in the U.S. Army, but not on a military cycling team. What is your experience level on the bike??? What Army are you serving in???

Military cycling teams are usually quite fast and competetive, and are usually comprised of upper category amateurs.

If you are new to cycling, it could take at least one 3-4 year enlistment (or longer) to get to a level where you could make the team.

If you have a critical M.O.S(job), your commander could deny all requests for re-assingnment to the team, even if the team was wiling to accept you as a member.

Militaries don't like to spend a lot of money training you to do a certain job, then have you request re-assignment to something completely unrelated.

Good luck making the team!!!

Try Lance Armstrong and Carmichael's Book on the 7 week training program. It tells you how to work out your fitness level using a 3 mile time trial. Once you have determined that, it sets out a 7 week training program, which should set you well on the way.

And where can this book be purchased?

Try this link:

There's some good links.

In my experience, some of the army are very good, some are so-so. I'm sure that should you join up, you'll find people at your level, and willing to help.

By the way, I raced in a triathlon which was hosting the British Army Championships. Most of them beat me in the swim, almost all beat me in the run, wereas I beat almost all of them on the bike. I put this down (and I'm generalising here) to the army being very fit, but maybe lacking in technique on the bike, probably because they aren't able to devote much time to cycling.

gRim11x,

I, too, am in the Army, and was wanting to join the Army team. However, according to the web research that I've done (www.allarmysports.com) there is no Army team. Other DoD branches have a team, but we don't. I'm not quite sure why. I wonder if we pester them enough (after we've trained up, of course) if they'll let us pursue it.

P.S.: I'm referencing U.S. Army here, btw.
