Physician Assistance for Those Affected by Hurricane Katrina
Academy staff and leadership are quite concerned about the aftermath of
Hurricane Katrina in states including Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and
Mississippi.
The Academy has been in contact with the Departments of Health in the
affected states. We will update the AAPM&R Web site with information
regarding how physicians can volunteer for relief efforts and other
medical needs. The Academy is also attempting to contact state PM&R
society presidents to obtain more information on the possible damage and
impact to our members.
The Louisiana State Medical Society has posted two alerts from the
Louisiana Department of Public Health and Hospitals. One asks for
physician volunteers and the other is a directive for Louisiana
physicians. To see the alerts, visit www.lsms.org.
The Mississippi Department of Public Health states that physicians who
would like to volunteer in that state should call 601-576-8085.
The Florida Department of Health has developed a Web site for Florida
physicians to volunteer for relief efforts. The site is set up primarily
for Florida physicians only, but it is allowing physicians from nearby
states to register. Click here to reach the site:
www.disasterhelp.net/gulfcoast.
At this time, we send our heartfelt concern to our members, their
families, their patients, and the citizens who are affected by this
devastation.  As relief efforts are announced, we will update members
as information becomes available. In the meantime, the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) has publicized a list of agencies that are in
need of donations to assist hurricane victims.
