My dad job keeps me pretty busy through 4/15 (US Taxes) but I need to order some road tires asap so I'm ready to go for the season. What to get?

I'm a casual roadie who just rides to keep in shape for MTB. I do the MS Bike tour in June - 50 miles (maybe more if I can train for it).

any help would be much appreciated! Something on sale would be even better :) Pricepoint/performance/nashbar :)

Either advice on what to look for or specific tire recommendations welcomed.

on first glance the Vredestein Fortezza SEs are on sale at Performance but I know nothing about what I need.

THANKS!

A good, durable, reliable tire is the Michelin Carbon, somewhere in the neighborhood of $35 each. Performance also has some Hutchinson Carbon Combs half off at $22 each, but they are more of a racing tire. Sweet deal though.

I heard they wear fast - how about the Vittoria Rubino Pro?

I ride the Rubino Pros, and am perfectly happy with them. Not the highest performance tire by any means, but they are fine for training.

Only experience with Vittorria was on a trainer, no info on the Rubinos unfortunately

You want something that will never wear out go with Specialized Armadillo, but they ride like a platic wheel. Gotta compromise. You want a good tire that rides well or you want one that will last forever. Not gonna get it all in the same package. I race and train on Michelin Pro Races, which are very supple and get loads of miles out of them. The carbons are a bit heavier, wear longer and still feel pretty good. My .02 (non tax deductible).

Seriously, those Hutchinson Carbon Comps on sale at Performance are the deal of the century. You can walk out with 4 tires for under a hundred bucks.

I just purchased some Conti 4000 on Ebay for $36 per tire. Seems like a pretty good tire for relatively good price.

I had the Fortezza SEs on my bike and I shredded the back tire on a piece of glass with less than 50 miles on them total. So needless to say, I don't like them.

I've been using the Conti gatorskins (~30 usd. per tire), and they're really good against flats and they wear well.

Try Biketiresdirect.com Personally I'm a fan of the Hutchinson Fusion Comps as my race tires and the Vredestein Frotezza SE's as a trainer.

I like to buy Maxxis tires because they support domestic racing - specifically racing in GA where I live (Tour de Georgia and the Maxxis Georgia Cup). While I like a deal as much as the next guy I prefer to make my money count by supporting companies which sponsor local events and support the community.

Anyway, I ride the Maxxis Detonator which is a practically indestructible training tire which gives a smooth ride with good grip. It runs about $30 per tire and will work very well for your intended use.
