Bigger crank set needed

The one thing I'm not over the moon about on my old faithful Giant Sedona is
the gearing. With a Shimano TX-70 24x34x42T triple I find I'm spending
nearly all of my time in the top cog and the top 3 gears on the rear. I'm
having to coast down lots of hills when I've still got heaps I could be
putting into it plus I don't think putting great gobs of torque into those
tiny little rear cogs can be good for their wear rates. So I reckon the
current 42T would make a better middle ring and a 48 or even a 53 big ring
would suit me for the 99% road riding I do these days. (I tend to average
around 30kmh on the flats and 25kmh overall sitting on around 80rpm on my
daily 20-25km ride.)
But what do I need to shop for to find a bigger triple? The TX-70 is
apparently a Tourney so something around that quality and price is what I
want to go for but I'm a bit unsure about compatibility with the existing
crank etc. Is there a part No anyone knows would suit me off the top of
their heads?

Can you remove the chainrings? If you can, you may only need to change these. Could save you $$$ but wont scratch the upgrade itch. You *may* also have probs with the front Derailleur if you change the chainring size. You will have to at least move it up the seat tube and dial it in again I reckon.

and watch the chain length if you go a few more teeth on the chainring than the chain is fitted for.... this may then require a cassette upgrade at the same time.. then you've got the option of rear gearing changes... then the option of a better/lighter cassette.... oh the upgrade path joy! :)

Hehe yep. Those things shouldn't be too much drama but I guess I'm just
looking at a stop gap to stretch the time until I need a new bike. OTOH it
might be better put up with it as is and save the dollars towards that end
instead. ;-)

Is it ISO square taper or octalink? Either way there are plenty of cranksets
around. Try www.aebike.com or pro bike kit (not sure on url).

My wife had the same problem on her Cannondale BadBoy, so I've just bought a non-compact Deore 26/36/48 to put on it. I looked into replacing all three chainrings, but it was cheaper to buy a completely new chainset. It's compatible with the existing front mech - all I needed was a new chain which wasn't a drama as it was up for replacement anyway.
