Road shoes for my W-I-D-E feet

It's about time for a new set of shoes for me, but I always have trouble finding units that will comfortably fit my size 12-E feet. In addition I would just as soon not have to get a second motgage to pay for them. I'm looking for a pair of road shoes (I'm not crazy about MTB shoes with their huge lugged soles). I've seen some Shimano shoes that are a couple of years old that aren't lugged that were fit with small metal cleats in a central recess. They looked like they'd last a lot longer than my Look plastic cleats. Those things wear out fast from walking on them. I do a mix of touring and recreational (25 - 100 mile) rides.

Does any one know of any good recommendations to fit my wide feet and put SPD's on them?

Try Sidi in Mega sizes.

Okay, I'm starting to think that if I truely want a protected for longevity sake (recessed) SPD cleat, I may have to give in to wearing a lugged (MTB) shoe. But I'm at the core a rather frugal guy. So far the most attractive recommendation has been the Sidi Bullet 2 at $150. Great googley moogley, that's some serious jing! Now I remember my Father's mantra about "you get what you pay for" & "the cheapest is the most expensive", but aren't there some good less expensive alternatives?

Give Specalized a shot - you might get lucky. I use Sidi Megas on the road, but my MTB shoes are by Specialized and fit pretty well. I'm sure their road shoes must be SPD compatible.

Hey LaCarp! I have the same size foot as you (12E) and I own a pair of Sidi Rampa II Mtb shoes (SPD cleats) and I got them for $60.00 on closeout last year. I got a pair of size 46 and they are as comfortable as my everyday shoes. I think the most current model that replaced them is the Sidi Blaze. They appear to be the same shoe except for the colour scheme. Give them a look, or maybe if you are lucky, you can find a steal on the older model. Good luck to you.

Cheers,
Brian

Louis Garneau Tri shoes are supposed to be wide. I saw such testimonies in another forum somewhere. I have not tried them, but plan to. And I do not even have wide feet. Seems most all cycling shoes are made for people with very narrow feet. Is that really what people want?

Performance Bike has the Garneau's, but they are not inexpensive.

Yes, I'm thinking that some sort of close-out might be my best bet too. I'm just hoping that it's not too late to score the close-outs already. I didn't start thinking about it in early winter like I should have. I'll just keep my eyes peeled.

Were the Sidi's that you bought the Mega width or just their regular width?

They were standard width shoes, and I love them. They are so comfortable I can walk in them all day

Re: Road shoes for my W-I-D-E feet

I just went out at noon and tried on bike shoes at my favorite bike shop. I tried Sidi, Nike, Pearl Izumi & Shimano. The only one that felt good was the Sidi, but much to my surprise the Mega was a little too wide. The best fit for my 12-E foot was a 47 regular width. The only pair they had was a Dominator, and it cost $230. I'm sorry, but I just can't do that. But now at least I know what to watch for in the sales. The hunt continues ....

No, I don't know where to find them locally. Maybe I'll check their website to see if they list a retailer in Minneapolis.

I tried them on the way home from work last night. They were too narrow across the balls of my feet. Thanks for the recommendation though. So far Sidi has been the only good fit. I'm watching the off-season sales.

How about the SHIMANO SH-R215 Road Shoe? Colorado Cyclist has them for only 159.99
