So a few things are on the horizon...

New powertap in 10 days or so (and yes I'm counting down~!)...

Indoor trainer - but which one?

In another thread RD mentioned the kurt kinetic road trainer. What trainer(s) do you recommend ?? (that you have experience with or own please...)

My primary goal here is to use my road bike w/PT on the trainer mostly for interval sessions, (hello L4!).

I did a search for 'trainer recommendation' but didn't find any relevant threads, just some stuff on indoor bikes.

Thanks! :)

Kurt Kinetic Road Machine all the way... Larger flywheel makes it far better than Fluid2
Check this out:

In there is a picture of a new Kurt Kinetic enhancement to allow the bike to sway side to side for more realistic sprint workouts.

Nice

$500 is a bit more than I wanted to spend, though I admit the side-to-side motion is tempting...

One really has to decide the purpose of trainer rides. I have one goal in my trainer rides -- increasing my sustainable power at one or more targeted durations. I do not have goals that are fulfilled by trainers or rollers that mimic road riding so that I can improve my balance, cornering, sprinting or anything else related to handling my bike. My goals are limited to targeted adaptations, period.

+1 on the Kinetic Road Machine. Skip the side-to-side thingy and you're looking at $275.

Increasing FTP is my #1 goal, my #2 goal, and #3 goal.

The rest is more 'oh that would be nice' - but hardly something I'm going to spend extra money on.

frenchyge - thanks for the recommendation. I checked the kurt kinetic website and it is msrp for $330. Where can I find it for $275? Do you have a link or site?

Check out http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=7&major=3&minor=11. I just got my kinetic from them. They're one of the best online retailers.

Thank you both, RD & Tanggoman for the links - definetly better prices than through the manufacturer's website.

Enough savings to buy a copy of the cyclingpeaks software~

Bring on the time change and cold weather, I'll be like Otis Reading, sitting on the dock all day and doing L4's... :D

I got mine through Analytic Cycling (along with my PT Pro, and Cycling Peaks software), but they've taken away most of the product links now for some reason.

Should I warn my friends in Las Cruces or do you want the shock factor next spring? :)

LOL - Now don't deny me the treasured shock factor after several hard months in my indoor labratory :)

Trainers are pretty rough on tires. You may want to order either a cheap tire or a trainer specific tire. I think frenchy went the cheap tire route and others have gone the trainer specific tire route.

The plot thickens! As usual I suspect :)

Well my plan was to do my weekday rides on the trainer...interval sessions basically. Then ride outdoors during the weekends (warmer times of day). Do these trainer specific tires survive well outside? If no, then I'd probably opt for the cheap tire route. In fact, that sounds simpler overall.

No, they are for use on the trainer exclusively.

That's precisely why frenchy and others use cheap tires. Good choice.

I have no affiliation with this site or merchandiser, but googled this site up where
I saw a kinetic road machine for $240 from bike man..

Rating: Not yet rated
Kurt Kinetic Road Machine Fluid Trainer

Quantity in Basket: 0
Price: $239.95

I do have a kinetic (bought mine from LickBike for $275)..and I love it..
It is bulletproof, and working out with it will crush you. A great machine....
The best thing about it is it's formulaic power curve (though I haven't power-tap tested it's accuracy..)

I don't know if it is true, but on the 1up site they state that no warranty will be offered by dealers who sell for under $275. It might be worth checking with KK to ensure a full warranty attaches to the unit offered above. Maybe it's just marketing hype by 1up, but maybe it's not.

BTW, the KK warranty is one hell of a warranty http://www.kurtkinetic.com/Lifetime_Warranty.php.

Anyone tried the Kinetic trainer with the combined 12 and 6 pound flywheels (on their pro trainer)? The Kinetic site says the heavier flywheel provides a better feel for endurance sessions, but I was thinking of picking up a Computrainer for those instead of spending the extra $200 on the pro version.

Well, for my personal use I have an even cheaper alternative which I wouldn't necessarily recommend without the usual disclaimers. I actually just save the old tires each time I buy new ones, and rotate the old tires to trainer duty. ;)

You mean the retreads you buy? I always thought those were only for 16-wheelers.:D
