cycling heart rate

I have a couple questions about heart rate while cycling for a trained runner. Everything I have read has said it is not uncommon to be 10-15 beats below where it would be while running. However, mine seems to be too low. I run at around 160. When I was biking on the trainer all winter, my heart rate would be between 150-160 at a high cadence (90+) for the whole ride. Now that I am biking outside, my cadence is still very high (usually close to 100) but my heart rate has been averaging 135. I can feel my quads burning when I am above 150 usually. Why is there such a huge discrepancy from biking on the trainer to on the roads? Any advice for increasing my aerobic HR? Ive been throwing in short bursts, hills etc...It seems counterintuitive that I cant bike as hard aerobically as I could when I wasnt in biking shape (during the winter).

yes, It was much easier to ride at what I thought was an aerobic heart rate (155) on the trainer. I even did a few tempo rides on the trainer, keeping my heart rate at 170 or so. Now that I am biking outside, my hr is about 20 beats lower (135). When I climb hills it increases up into the 150s, but otherwise, I have to be pushing pretty hard, at a pace that isnt very comfortable, to get to 155. I thought that my muscular endurance was good because of my indoor riding...now im not so sure. Is this a fairly common experience from riding indoor to outdoor?

Have you been running a lot in between your time on the trainer and riding outdoors? Are you well rested when you ride?

My running has been about the same when riding indoor and outdoor. Im training more now, but I am reaching a higher volume portion of the season. But I dont feel overly tired when I ride. I actually feel really good, its just that I feel like im not getting an aerobic workout. And I dont necessarily think I am going to easy. Generally riding at around 20mph. Even last summer when I rode outside, my heart rate would be in the 150s most of the time. Maybe it is due to a difference in position while riding this indoor/outdoor year versus last summer (have only been riding on my TT bike instead of the road bike) so my heart is more level with the rest of my body. It seems that most inexperienced bikers have lower aerobic hr initially until they improve their muscular endurance. But if I was riding in the 150s for bpm last year, I feel I should be able to continue riding at that aerobic level. Or is this expected once you become more toned for biking?

I am a runner and a cyclist too (ran 11+ miles today and rode 50 yesterday). Anyway, my heartrate is always much higher on average when running, in comparison to cycling. Also, my heart rate average is always much higher when I ride my turbo trainer. I never average 150-160 for most of my outdoor rides, but can get my heartrate in that range and much higher when climbing hills. If you want your heartrate higher, ride faster, encorporate sprint interval training and/or hit the hills!!! Try that and if your average heartrate doesn't increase, then you are SuperMan. Congratulations.
