First, I would like to refer you to: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hepatitis/c/fact.htm

On this site, we find the causes of hepatitis. That is that it is a
viral infection that affects the liver. Hepatitis C is the type which
is contracted through blood exposure, such as shared needles,
contaminated blood transfusions, and any other exposure to
contaminated blood. The incidence of hepatitis C is 1 out of 10,000
people. There are other forms of hepatitis, the most common being A &
B.

The manner in which hepatitis C virus works is by binding to iron
molecules and then delivering large amounts of free-radical damage to
liver cells. These can mutate cell DNA to eventually cause cancer and
in the process kill large amount of liver cells. In order to "cure"
the disease, the body requires for iron levels in the liver and blood
to be at their lowest levels and therefore too much iron makes
successful therapy difficult to achieve. It, then becomes important to
reduce iron levels before beginning the most popular treatment with
interferon (antineoplasm, which is used often used in the treatment of
cancer and it
exerts an antiviral action. In some instances, it is actually
necessary to remove some blood in order to lower the iron.

Estimated 3.9 million (1.8%) Americans have been infected with HCV of
whom 2.7 million are chronically infected. This is all hepatitis, not
just Hepatitis C.

Following are a list of helpful sites which will provide you much more
information on the subject of hepatitis and it's treatment if you wish
to pursue.
