115/75 is considered the new gold standard for blood pressure. It's perfect. Couldn't be any better in fact.

It is a good BP but you need to check it more than once over a period of time before eating, after,in the mornings ,after excercise.
This will give you an average since BP varies.
Not that you need to be obcessive about it,just check in on ocassion.

Thanks for the reply J, someone loaned me a BP tester (I don't know the proper name for them) yesterday and a few of us tested our BP at work, our ages range from 47-61, every other Guy's readings were pretty high, the second # ranged from 84-91 I could be working alone by Christmas at this rate...J/k

Every time I go to the Docs, which is rare, and have my annual Physical, the Nurse checks my BP and I always ask Her "Is it OK"...they always say "Perfect"...in fact, last time the Nurse told me I have the BP of a Teenager (I'm 50)....my Wife always tells me I have the brain of a 6 year old...

Anyway, I checked it twice and it was the same....

The other Guys btw do zero exercise, the only exercise I do is ride my Bike...
I just thought there might be a chance that my BP is too low? So I thought I'd ask you knowledgable Chaps...so I really appreciate the replies....

Re: My BP = 115/74 good or bad?

Mine usually averages around 110/65 and resting heart rate 44. I am just a bit older than you.
I probably have the brain of 5 year old and would like the body of an 18 year old,but my wife won't let me have one. An 18 year old, that is.
BTW: Anything above 90 (diastolic) is considered hypertensive, not necessarily fatal but should be monitored.
We had guy pass out at work today, his pulse was 60 and BP could not be detected. That's after he was up and around.
I am waiting to her the doctors diagnosis.I am guessing dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
It took 30 min. to convince him he needed to be transpoted to the
ER.

So I'm smarter than you then

I hope that Guy is OK!! Let us know what happened....

Your BP and HR are incredibly low, that's fantastic!!

I honestly don't feel 50, I can't believe that I am in fact, my aim is to ride for another 25 years....I met a great Guy at a Century (Palm Springs) last year, he was 81...he said he rides 200-300 miles a week!! Brilliant!! He said his wife bought him a new Bike for his 74th B-Day...I know another Guy who is 71, he's fast too...I sometimes meet him at one of my fave starbucks mid-ride...he rides the same route 5 days a week, 58 miles...

You could be smarter ,but I have actually been losing ground on the IQ level since birth.
So I started out smarter and I am declining every hour.

Re: My BP = 115/74 good or bad?

My BP ran 120's over low to mid 80's for years. I herniated a disc and bulged another and in the course of treatment, the Dr's noticed it slightly elevated and we attributed it to white coat syndrome. Next visit it was a little higher. Finally, I went back for another steroid injection and it was 165/110. Whoa! I went to my family doctor and again 160's over 110's. I started on atenolol and began cycling (for the disc problem, but the side effect was some help with the blood pressure.) Today, my BP is 120's over low 70's and in the evenings after sitting for 30 minutes it can get to high 110's over mid to high 60's. This is still with the aid of the BP medicine. I am not a medical practitioner and didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I would love to have 115/74 without the aid of atenolol. Those numbers sound pretty good to me. Just my incoherent ramblings on the subject.

Re: My BP = 115/74 good or bad?

Not incoherent ramblings at all, I'm glad you posted because My Wife also has a herniated Disc and almost a year ago had the Steroid Injections you mentioned, she did get clearance from the UCI by the way ;-), in fact, she had a course of 3 which they said was her limit...??
She still has problems however, it's her sciatic nerve apparently (I'm no expert) and lately it's been getting pretty bad, her leg gets kinda numb...plus she has a lot of pain..
She's a keen Cyclist and we'd really like to get this cleared up, do you have any advice?
We do have a Chiropractor and are big believers, he's helped us a lot, but it doesn't seem to help a herniated disc, she has an appt at the neuro Doc in a couple of weeks and is going to ask about a Micro surgery where they go in and "scrape" for want of a better word, the disc on the inner diameter, people have told us they've had this done and it feels immediately like they've had a rock removed from their spine...however, we do realize back surgery of any kind does carry risks too...what do you think?

My Doc will give me three steroid injections, each one separated by about 2 months. Then I have to wait at least six months before another round. In between it is Hydrocodone 10/650s for the pain and as much cycling as I can get in. I went to therapy for ten months, and just didn't get much relief, at least compared to the bicycle. My Doc mentioned swimming as the best exersize, but told me cycling was a very close second. So I chose cycling. I am doing about 80 to 90 miles a week and feel pretty good, although I don't think it will ever be good, it will be as good as I get these days. Anyhoo, I certainly wish the best for your wife. The surgeon who looked at my MRIs told me three possible outcomes from surgery, great improvement, no difference and real problems up to and including paralysis. I asked what the odds were and he said "Just what I mentioned, one in three." I didn't like the odds and chose conservative treatment and pain management. Push comes to shove I can always have surgery, but once you cross that bridge, you burn it behind you. Lots to think about.

Re: My BP = 115/74 good or bad?

Well, I certainly hope your back stays good, I suffer with problems every year or so and it's miserable I know....

My wife has an appointment with the Neurologist in a couple of weeks, so maybe he'll refer her to the Pain specialist for more shots or hopefully recommend something more permanent...her goal is to do the Palm Springs Century again in Feb 07, so hopefully she'll make it...

Thanks for the reply by the way and take care!!
