Hi,

First post so be gentle !

I have entered into a London to Paris bike ride/race for next March but am concerned about my level of fitness and that 90+ miles a day will be unachievable at my current level.

What training would you suggest? Any hints/tips on getting fit enough in a fast time frame would be greatly appreciated.

I currently ride 15-20 miles each weekend.

Thanks in advance

Suggest you first start doing one longer ride on the weekends. Add maybe 5 miles to your distance weekly, until you're up to 90-100 miles. Then, suggest you start adding a second ride the next day, up to at least 50 miles. The idea is to prepare yourself for the back-to-back stages, which is tougher than just riding 90 miles one day.

Curious, how many miles and days is the event, and how do you cross the channel with your bike? Sounds like a lot of fun if you devote the time and effort needed to get in shape for it.

Can you ride at least 4 times per week? Make at least one weekend ride longer and keep increasing the distance as the weeks go by. For a long ride like multiple 90mi rides on consecutive days, you'll need to build up a lot more endurance and also be able to learn to eat while riding. On shorter rides, up the intensity somewhat.

The more you train the more you can train....

You could get yourself a coach;)

Thanks for the feedback guys.

To Answer DHK2 - The whole trip is 300 miles over 3.5 days. We will take bikes on the Eurostar then continue from the otherside. Thanks for advice on increasing distance, I will definately start doing that. I agree with both your comments about the back to back stages. This is what is going to kill me !!

Alex Simmons - Thanks for your advice also. can you recommend a good coach, remember I live in London!

Thanks again guys and if anyonme else has some thoughts they would be greatly appreciated!

Have a look at Richard Stern Training (Ric is based in the UK):

OK, I'm biased as I am an RST Associate Coach;)

While I am based in Australia I do take clients from around the world and have had client from UK before. Typically I would work with power meter data since with that I see just about everything, although it can be done with HRM and/or RPE.

There are a number of other good coaches that frequent the forums, try a search for threads on the topic.
