Best Bike computer with cadence?

Is the Cateye Astrale still the best bike computer with cadence? I bought mine 2 years ago and maybe something better came out. Reason I need another one was because I just bought my dream commuter bike today - a 2007 Trek Pilot 2.1 spa - and will sell my 2004.5 Giant OCR 1 on ebay. Got it on a Trek year end clearance sale for $1400 !

Hey.

I've go the Polar CS600 it's a dream! Reads everything well and it's your perfect training partner.May set you back $600 or so.

I've been happy with my Cateye Double Wireless. It's easy to install, has lots of features (more than I use) and no wires. I bought for $100.

- I think for value , the Astrale8 is hard to beat.

- I also have the 300DW , and it works.

- Cadence is important initially in your training , when you're
slightly more advance and your legs have 'learned' , you will
probably be better served by a HRM.

.

Hey guys - I already have an ergomo pro and 4 Polar Power kits on my other excellent road bikes. For a commuter bike - something used for transportation and lugging cargo around in 2 Jandd panniers - I don't need any fancy recording computer or GPS one.

I thought about Flightdeck but it has simulated (computed) cadence.

Purchased my Cateye Astrale 8 in June. Very happy with it. Mostly because it does all the usual stuff plus CAD + it's rear wheel for winter training on trainer.

If you have Flight Deck shifters, consider the Flight Deck computer. I enjoy mine. No wiring for cadence. I dont' know how much 10 speed units cost, but 9 speed compters can be found fairly cheap these days.

I suppose the Astrale still uses wires, correct? I used Astrales for years, but now I have a Sigma 1606 L with wireless speed and wireless cadence. I paid about $55.00 for it and have had it for one year with no problems. The characters are bigger and darker than the Astrale, so the readout is easier to read at a glance.

It can easily be mounted right on the stem, and mounted nice and flat. Since I already had a couple of inexpensive wristwatch type HRMs, I just strap one of those on the bars too.

I have a Flight Deck also and it has served my purposes well. Like you said, it is simulated cadence calculated from the gear ratio and the speed, so you can be coasting and still get a cadence reading. It doesn't know if you are pedalling or not. You really have to make sure that all of the information such as the number of gear teeth and wheel diameter is correct to get an accurate reading. What I really like about it is you can look to see what chainring-cog combination you are riding in without looking back under you right arm. What I don't like about it is that it is kinda easy to accidentally reset your mileage and elapsed time with the placement of the buttons in the brifter hoods, but it also allows you to change from one function to another more easily. It is a little succeptable to RFI.....I don't think that my max speed on a flat last June was really 130 MPH!

I love my Cateye Double Wireless. In a single screen with three windows, it shows speed, cadence, time traveled, and distance. Other views are possible, but I usually leave it right there. It's all I need to know.

I hade the Flight Deck, but I kept pushing the buttons accidentally (they're on the inside aspect of the handlebars).

That comes up a lot and I always wonder why it's an issue with so many people. If you're pedaling, that's your cadence. If you're coasting, it provides a good clue about when to start pedaling again.

That's what I think too - why would it matter if it shows a cadence while you're coasting? In the 1200 miles I've had the Flightdeck, I don't think I've ever consciously looked at the cadence while I was coasting.

If the thought is that somehow the virtual cadence is inaccurate, I just haven't that to be the case.

Anyway, I think it is a great idea and works great. I like the gearing graphic as well. I tend to keep mine set on the set of read-outs that include cadence and that's the reading I pay most attention to (other than MAX and average after the ride!)

My polar puts me at exactly 104.5 km/h quite frequently - it must be 50Hz AC that does it.
