Negotiating Melbourne CBD intersections for an out-of-towner

personal rule of thumb...
get into rightlane (traffic is 'usually' quite slow, and speed limit is now 40kph in town...) and go round rightside of hookturners,
IF you know you are in first half of light phase.
When in doubt and room allows i sometimes go round the leftside as you suggested as if you arrive in the intersection as light goes orange its every (wo)man for themselves and have seen a few cleanups as hookturners panic and often can't see you in rearview or isde mirror as their car is slightlu angled to right (ie mirror isnt pointing at rear traffic any longer...).
Taking a lane in CBD 'seems' to be getting easier (others may disagree???) or maybe I'm just gettin bolshier

Re: Negotiating Melbourne CBD intersections for an out-of-towner

When coming up behind cars waiting to do a hook turn, I use the same method as cars. I pass on their right.

However it doesn't always work. Once I entered the intersection on green. The lights ahead turned to amber and the first car completed his hook turn (too early, he was supposed to wait until it was red ahead and green to his right). I braked to avoid damaging his door, ending up stopped beside the second car. The second driver then abused me for preventing him from completing his turn. I decided to clear the intersection quickly rather than instruct the driver that he should abuse the first driver.
