.. . . somebody else. Bummer.

Oy, such a horse race it was. We were tied for points (they assign 5
points for first, 4 for second, etc., down to fourth place). TIED!
Fair Competition department broke the tie by toting up our scores for
the individual items (seems fair to me) and she won. Are you ready? By
THREE points! ROFL!! THREE points out of more than 1150! What a
hoot! I had 1153, she had 1156. Good on her!

I spoke at length with the building super after the announcement and he
seemed to be feeling awfully bad for me. And I told him, as I tell one
and all, I do this for laughs and in the grand scheme of things, one
more ribbon or medallion is way down on the list of Important Things.
Pretty high up on my list of same, though, is my little friend who had
the stem cell transplant at the U 5-6 weeks ago. Before that
transplant, he was on his way to becoming toast. The transplant was
wicked painful with nasty sides, but it took (if I understand things
correctly) and guess what! Now the little guy has HOPE! How good is
THAT!!

Me and my ribbons and medallions? B F D.

There's always next year, eh? I expect to have a lot of fun talking
about it on Wednesday when I do my radio gig.

Congratulations on taking a gracious second place. Not being the top winner
certainly does not make you a loser. Wow, you missed by 0.26019 percent.
Congrats to both of you.

It was the beets. You have to give them more respect.

It seemed to me a reasonable way to make a determination. I sure wish I
could have been a fly on the wall when it was all happening, though.
Just to see if there was much drama in the counting.

Exactly.

Oooooh, Ed!! I love you! Thanks for doing the calculation. Now Rob
won't have to. :) I was thinking it was less than 1% difference, but
I pulled that out of thin air, math not being my best or next to best
subject. Thanks for the good wishes.

Well, you're still a winner anyway. Heck, the second you even put an entry
into the competition you're a winner. I must have been the dirt chunks
that did you in :(

Hey, give your friend my best wishes and a hug for me. Hope all continues
to go well.

Second place? That's great! Now you have something to strive for
next year! (was that Minnesotan enough?)

I think you should plan a grand day of pouting where you wear all the
medals and ribbons (along with your June Cleaver pearls and pumps) and
heave deep sighs over the injustice. As I always say, you might as
well feel sorry for yourself, because no one else is going to.

At least you know how Al Gore feels!

Gotta either find or buy new before Wednesday. Thanks for the reminder.

Too many years out of them; I'm into comfort now.

I'd have to find them all first. 98% are in some file envelope in a
closet, I think.

Jeez, I didn't intend to give an impression of feeling sorry for myself
and I regret that that's how you interpret my stories.

He cans, too? Who knew.

I don't know about the Minnesota State Fair, but some fairs have a
special award just for this situation, where the judges are deadlocked
in deciding the best of the best. The judges feel bad about giving all
the glory to one, when the other is just as good. It might only be
awarded every 10 years, and even then, only if the judges know they can
award it. The award is called something like "Award of Special Merit",
"Award of Special Distinction" or similar. If it were horses (see above)
it is usually called "Reserve Grand Champion" and is not nearly so rare.

I think you was robbed!

You're a grand soul, Barb. :)

I was thinking about you the other day -- Sister needs me to help
pick raspberries next week and we're going to make jam. I haven't
done any canning since I was a teen and used to help my Mom, so
I'm kind of looking forward to it. Sister is considering entering
some jams at the Puyallup Fair next year. I told her to go for it,
since you don't live here and won't be competing, she might have
a chance... ;-)

Heh! Good luck on the raspberry jam. Our Fair gets more entries for
raspberry and strawberry jams than for any other "regular" single-fruit
lot. That I placed third for mine is sweet. There were 39 entries.
Tell her to go for it ‹ it's fun to be on the "inside" of the whole
experience.

I get my berries from Sister Julie -- she doesn't charge enough for them
but, hey, she sets the price. (Kind of like Terri's wine ethics
question.) I take all she will sell to me. She's going to raise her
price next year and I'll take all she'll sell me then, too. I don't
have to pick them.

I think she was planning to enter her tiny blackberry jam. It's to die
for, as good as Mom's. :)

Heck, if I didn't have to pick 'em, I'd pay for them too...
