Please do not forget that Matthew Hotopf of Wessely's group is another hired gun psychiatrist with
insufficient ethics to play solitaire without cheating.

He is the one who licked DOD's boots with a ridiculous article in the BMJ in 2000 that claimed that
it wasn't really vaccines that were the problem, even though his own study (the Lancet, Jan 1999)
showed they were the only thing that could be linked to GWS. No, it was the problem of when they
were given and the stress, that terrible stress, associated with vaccination, not the vaccines, no
no no. This was a sop to DOD to show that Wessely et al were terribly sorry about their Lancet paper
blaming vaccines. "Please keep funding us, we'll be good," he whined. Later Wessely came over to the
US to see DOD with begging bowl in hand. Boy were they sorry they had done good science, and
promised never to do so again.

After two British interns showed that Hotopf's so-called statistical analysis about the timing of
vaccination was garbage, he had to retract that conclusion about how it was stress, not vaccines.

But the slimy shrink couldn't do that like a man, either. No, his retraction in the BMJ had so much
doublespeak he made it sound as if he was right all along.

Now Hotopf is a coauthor of two more BMJ papers on GWS. Of course, I am convinced that this is the
last word on the subject--NOT!

I am convinced that if his name is there, both papers can probably be safely tossed without
being read.

And Daniel Clauw MD, who has done some very good work in the past, also generously funded by DOD,
wrote the commentary this time. Oh No--this doubletalk must be contagious, because Clauw seems to
have caught it! Run out and get your doublespeak shot right away before any more children die of
this dread disease!

Clauw acknowledges that "no specific environmental exposure, with the possible exception (6 studies
from 3 countries show vaccines caused GWS, so it must be a possibility?) of vaccines given at the
time of deployment, has been associated with the development of these symptom complexes." But then
comes more BS: "In addition, treatments such as aerobic exercise and cognitive behavioural therapy
have been found to be useful." No Dan, your JAMA VA study showed they weren't really helpful: the
so-called benefit was marginal and fleeting.

Finally, Clauw goes ahead, dumps the vaccine evidence overboard, and comes up with this charmer,
guaranteed to get him a million dollar grant real soon: "But we don't serve these or other veterans
well by focusing inordinate attention on the specific exposure(s) that may have been responsible for
some rare cases of illness."

That's right, Dan, let's be certain not to focus on the causes, for some "rare" cases of illness
(only 200,000 in the US alone with GWS). And for heaven's sake forget those pesky vaccines. After
all, you can die of anthrax and flu, so grab those shots before we run out god forbid; and GWS
doesn't kill anyone, it just disables you!

I keep waiting to wake up from a horrible dream in which doctors deny patients are sick, deny
diseases have causes, and deny their patients treatments and disability pensions. But I am getting
old waiting.

For those who can't be bothered to check out John's posts anymore, a well-designed cohort study
comparing Gulf War veterans with non-service personnel has shown that, contrary to a widely made
claim ----

Quote "----- There is no current excess risk of cancer overall nor of site specific cancers in Gulf
war veterans. Specific exposures during deployment have not resulted in a subsequent increased risk
of cancer. The long latent period for cancer, however, necessitates the continued follow up of
these cohorts."

John's piece, as per usual, offers no contrary evidence. The author, after an ad hominem attack on
one of the six authors, says the papers "can be safely tossed without being read". Typical of
alternative medical "debate".
