I was wondering if people would like to share what they have achieved as a max speed on the bike? Where they achieved it, on what bike, and how?

I have never cracked the 100km/h mark as yet but have been close (97) down a hill just outside Bathurst. My best down Mt Panorama (car racing circuit) is around 93km/h.

I was motor-pacing a friend the other day (behind my landcruiser) and over the last few kays before heading back to town we decided to do a "wind-out". He hit 101.6km/h ! recorded on his flightdeck computer. he was riding the 53x11.

Any other unusual or FAST stories...........would be great to hear them.

Same as you, 97km/h. Twice actually, once behind a big lorry and the second time down the highest mountain of Spain, El Teide. The speed limit on both occations was 90km/h. :D

The fastest i have gone is only 87kms behind a garbage truck
I dont know how you can go so fast ??? ???

I've done 72.2kmh on a mtb coming off Storey Bridge in Brisbane.
I was passing cars coz it was a 50kmh zone.
I know it's not 97 but I was on 2.3" tyres.

Did 96km/h on Saturday during the Spar/Numbi Classic. Some monstrous downhills dropping down the escarpment towards Hazyview form Graskop and Sabie. It was on the downhill from the Bonnet to the MacMac falls. Could have gone faster but chickened out. You can do these speeds easily on a tandem. Scary though.

Keep those wheels spiunning and those heads tucked in !!!!!!!

Mmm my favorite subject speed. I have a hill behind my house that I have on nearly every decent attained above 90kph. The highest been 97kph. Problem is that there is a traffic light at the bottom and you have to break. It is about 600m in length and I have done a TT from bottom to top in 3:05. The other way round takes less than half a minute.

Just outside town I followed a cattle truck down a hill and got 101kph, as well as a lot of brown stuff from the cattle on the truck, yuck. Normally this hill will only allow tops of around 70kph.

On a local race I managed to get a speed of 93kph and broke away from my fellow riders down a pass. They later caught up and the one guy still said I was mad and he never saw anyone ride like I did. He said he backed off at 74kph.

Highest speed though was while I was racing in Holland. I had dropped off the main bunch to help a team mate get back to the group but he was nowhere in sight and I was told to get back in the group. Myself and another rider got together and chased the bunch. We were closing in quick and we were gaining some good time. There was a small climb and a very steep pass on the other side. I went down this pass at 110kph, may have been faster but I crashed and my computer zeroed after that. Last reading I saw was when the figures hit 110. A motorbike marshal said he was doing 107kph and we were dropping him. He pulled away and tried to warn us about a hairpin bend ahead but by the time he warned us it was too late. My fellow rider and I drifted into the side railing and came down at probably round 50 - 60 kph. Injuries were very little considering the speed but my wheels were totaled and my team car went past with my wheels on. The race doctor pulled me out of the race cause I had a head injury that was bleeding quite a lot. Otherwise I was fine.

Lived to speed another day. Hope to reach them speeds again, maybe even get faster. It is fun. ::)

Ooops these were done on a Colnago Master. The bike was probably between 10 to 12 years old at the time (1994).

My current bike a Colnago Carbitubo has been around 120 kph behind a bakkie but that was the previous owner that did that, also his computer didnt register anything over 105kph and he took the bakkies reading so it was probably only 105-110kph. I have taken it up to 96kph on the hill behind my house. As an Idea of my trust in Colnago I have gone down hills with no hands at over 70 kph.... It was as stable as can be. Wonderful bikes and I will not ride any other.

92 km/h down a hill in the hyper to hyp race.

80 km/h slipstreaming a brewries truck :)

Well its not as fast as you guys, but i got up to 83kmph on a 53x13, (im getting a new bike soon ;D) and it was on a main street heading into town! and that was pretty scary, have to keep an eye out for police, a friend got booked doing 70 in a 60 zone on a bike! But i got hit in the eye by a big bug and it hurt like hell! So i cant imagine what its like doing 100ish!

I have tried numerous times to be fined for speeding while cycling but the coppers are always in the wrong place. Been hit by a stone shot up from a truck at round 60-70 kph. It connected my glasses with quite a speed. Heard a loud crack but when I looked at the lens there was just a small scratch on it, my helmet off to Oakley and their amazing glasses. Remember it is best advised to get a good pair of glasses for cycling. A bug at speed can cause some tense moments. Oh yes before I forget, keep mouth closed as often as possible. A swarm of "Miggies" tastes terrible....

how can the cops nail him for this ? I dont know of any laws around that require a bicycle to have a speedo, therefore he could not tell that he was breaking the law and the cops should not be able to nail him.

I've through traps doing 60 in a 40 zone and the cops did not know what to do. They got up to stop me and then when they saw it was just a bike they let through.

Well the cops reasoning was that a bike is a vehicle, and hence must obey the same road rules as a car, and so they pinged him! but im not sure if he lost points or was just fined the $70 odd. To me this still seems like a bit of a joke but!

Okay I managed 42mph/67kmh yesterday on my roadbike, whilst I know it's nowhere near anybody else's speed , it's the fastest I've gone on a bike :), but the thing I loved was the fact that the bike was waiting for me, so the speed above is work in progress :D.

I've managed the same speed on a mtb but I know that there was nothing left in the bike.

My best is 51 mph/76 kph. ThaT was scary wicked fast to me. Love the sensation of speed, that's one of my favorite things about road bikes. Can't imagine these speeds you guys are talking about. Sounds great!!!

I'll just keep pushing and looking for those big hills. ;D ;D ;D

Fastest was in a race "The Race for Victory" down Kliprivier past Rand Water Board. In a bunch we hit 109km/h with a slight tailwind. All i can remember is the cold though. it was -2°C that morning .

More impresive was the 94km/h I achieved on a flat road behind a truck. Everything was going well until the truck drove over this sand which blew up and covered me and bike from head to rear derailleur.

My 96km/h doesn't sound that fast anymore. Same road as Steve_L (down Klipriverrd. in Jhb) during the Hyper to Hyper. I got a little scared (old aunties in front of me, swerving ::) , you never know!!), so I jabbed ye old brakes. It was fun (except for the old aunties!!). The nearest I got to that was down Ertjies Mountian near Vanderbijlpark (89km), in a bunch with a tail wind.

A little of topic but here goes anyway.
I spend the last weekend in the Sabie/Graskop/Pilgrimsrest area in Mpumalanga (South Africa).
Did the Long Tom pass from Lydenburg - coming into Sabie on the descent in did 78km/h.
From Pilgrimsrest I went up the Robber's Pass and came back the same way - did a max of 74km/h, this was quite scary, a few serious bind twists and turns on this descent.

Descending is quite a skill and a lot of hard work on mountain passes.

Descending rules!

At a race in France a few weeks back I did 26kms in 19 minutes! That's fast enough to beat Brad McGee's pursuit world record 6 times back to back!

The 19kms were from the top of the Col de Colombier down to Cluses - a drop of about 1500m with nice open bends and only one or two hair pins. FANTASTIC fun.

Ah yes!!! Descending. A big rider's favourite pastime ;D

Eldron, I'm jealous. You know I'll join you next time! I haven't done anything much more interesting than the descent down the otherside of Boulders at the Jock. and Suikerbosrand during the Race for Victory and riding with through there with the Beneke group a couple of times.

Turns out I lied! Just checked my computer and the descent was only 21km - but I hasten to add the last 2km were flat! Hehehehe.

Sean - Suikerbosrand is a pretty good descent - Boulders is even better. Not sure about doing the Jock again though. One LONG stage is a killer!
