Newbie UK road cyclist here. I have 3 questions for you experienced guys:

1. Why is Lance so hated? The guy defeated cancer, got back on his bike and won 7 tours in a row. All I can find is hate and ridicule for him on so many forums...

2. My wrists are hurting, more off the bike than on it. What could I be doing wrong?

3. It's cold here in November. During my 30 mile weekend rides, what do I do with all the snot!?

Thnaks for the witty and intelligent responses!

1. Lance is still well liked throughout the world. Check out how many people like and support his foundation.

2. Your wrist hurt because you are over massaging yourself. Be careful you may end up blind.

3. Swallow

  1. There are many possible answers for this one. Some people hate the guy for winning 7 TdF. Some dislike him for focusing so much on one race and ignoring so many of the racing monuments. Some think he doped. Some hate him for divorcing his wife, while others hate him for dumping Cheryl Crow. Some don't like his attitude. Some hate him for introducing tall, black socks in the peloton. Those are just a few of the reasons. Forums are rife with Armstrong bashing, but forums are like that in general: rife with all manner of things.
  2. Your position on the bike might be such that you've got to much weight on your hands. You might consider having a fit done, or if you've had a fit done, you might consider telling said fitter about the wrist thing. It can result from bars being too low, stem being too long, or a saddle being in the wrong position. It can also happen as a result of doing a new activity a lot, that is to say an activity your body isn't used to.
  3. You can launch snot rockets (hold one nostril closed with a finger or vice grips and blow hard through the other), or you can get used to wiping snot from your nose and then wiping it from your gloves to your jersey, bibs, tights, and etc. Note that sometimes wiping is still required after successful launch of a snot rocket. Failed launches can be very messy and might require lots of wiping. Some people are prone to exertional rhinitis....er, runny nose when exercising. The best thing to do is just learn to live with the idea that you may have more mucous on your clothes and face while riding in winter than you might at, say, a nice restaurant. The extra snot on your corpus can help temper excess pride. Please note that except in a very cases--when a friend is involved--it's almost never ok to launch a snot rocket into another rider. One very extreme option would be to wear something like what Lauren Ten Dam is wearing (albeit his reasons are much different) here:
