I gotta a good yr end bonus and wish to get myself a good road bike. 2 brands I’m considering. Either a S-Work Venge or a Bianchi Oltre. Both bike cost abt the same and I’m not looking to save a couple of hundred dollars. I’m just a social rider and ride av. twice a week and like to have a bike that I can enjoy riding for the next 5 yrs. (barring not chasing fashion).

I know the spec for each bike quite well. Both are very light, the Venge is made more stiffer and more aero than Oltre, but that isn’t my main criterion in choosing a bike. I don’t need all the stiffness as I’m not into competitive cycling. I like the style of the Venge but the celeste colour of the Oltre caught me. I’m sure both will suit my riding if made to fit properly.

Like to hear your opinion, if any, which may able to make me decide.

Tks.

I've pedaled neither, but everything I've read about the Venge says that's not exactly the bike you want for long rides or rides on less than smooth roads. With that said, if possible you should test ride both bikes to see what you think. Buy the one that fits best, rides best, and pleasures your eyes.

I purchased a 2012 Bianchi Oltre Vacansoleil-DCM Team Issue frame and I couldn't be happier, after 10 years of Giant bicycles.

In saying that, I have never ridden a Venge and I am sure it has it's appeal and merit but, as alienator stated, I doubt the Venge would suit you best. The Oltre is a more all-rounder with great ride and handling, the Venge is more aggressive and designed for sprinting beasts like Cavendish. I did consider an SL4 (and Venge) only briefly only to dismiss them mainly because of their more mass-produced brand and existence.

I may be biased because one of the reasons for going Bianchi is my heritage and past ownership of those bikes in my family, but it is beautiful to behold, unlike the more mundane Venge (unless you can fork out for the McLaren version). From cable rubber protectors, to celeste titanium bolts, it is a work of art and, like I said, it rides more smoothly than it ought to be considering the pro-bike rocketship that is it.

Bianchi just released the XR range (different color scheme, bigger bottom bracket, 30% stiffer and 20g lighter) but I would look around for a 2012 run-out if money is another consideration. Here's some Oltre you can admire, including mine and the 2013 equivalent: http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=105069&start=60

Whatever you choose, both bikes are at the top of their game. Happy riding!
