Expected swim improvement?

Hello,

I know that this will be a virtually impossible question to answer in completeness - so I am looking
for opinions and guidelines so that I can set some reasonable goals and expectations.

First some history: This past year my goal in swimming was distance. My speed was "fast enough" and
I just wanted to maintain it while improving distance. At the beginning of the year a 1:30/100yrd x
5 repeats was tough but just do-able. By October I completed my iron-distance (2.4 mile) swim at
about a 1:33 pace. I was pleased.

This was not with a lot of swimming - 2 to 3 workouts a week at 2400-3000 yards each - basically
about 1hr to 1hr 15min per session.

Where I'm going with it: This year I am going to forgo another Ironman and instead focus on the
Olympic distance triathlons (basically a 1700yrd swim). And now that the distance is not an issue
I want to concentrate on speed. And I am now willing to spend (at least during these cold New
England winter months) 4-5 visits to the pool each week (in addition to core/weight/cross training
of course).

Now the question: What's a reasonable amount of improvement to expect over three months, six months,
year, and 2 years?

My goal is to get down to 1:05/100yrd for 1700yrd in 2 years. Do you think a 1:20 pace is too
aggressive for the next 6 months? After my first week of "serious" swim training I am seeing my
baseline numbers as such: 100yrd x 1 at 1:08 100yrd x 2 at 1:20 200yrd x 1 at 2:43 100yrd x 3 at
1:24 (and quickly grows to 1:30 pace for anything longer)

I'm 32 if that makes a difference...

Thanks! CF
