You are asking the wrong person; ask one of those who has been killed, and also one of those who survived because they carried a weapon.

I was once chased by a big dog. It was very scary. I was riding late at night along a quiet unlit suburban sreet; suddenly this dog rushed out from a hedge and with a growl was at my side with full intent in doing me harm. An involuntary scream and a burst of adrenalin was deployed instantly and I got away.

If the dog had been able to get a mouthful of leg or denim I would have been in big trouble. I have since learned of unarmed dog-killing techniques. Part of the arsenal you don't see and dickheads can't ban.

LOL. Ordinary citizens who bother to get CCW permits are usually not the sort of people you would want to have carrying a weapon. They are paranoid nuts who dream about shooting people.

Technically, it is democratic, but I don't agree that it is a Western country. The US differs only in wealth per capita from many third world democracies. It lacks the highly-developed health, correctional, social welfare and (to a certain extent) educational systems of the standard that differentiate truly Western countries from more chaotic democracies such as India or South Africa. It is also much closer to being run by religious nutters than any of the countries that I regard as Western. The pathological degree of prioritisation of individual freedoms above societal benefits is also not seen in truly Western countries.

Only twice, but do jealous husbands qualify as criminals.

What you say is true in some cases, a few cops even fit your comment, as would a few judges and priests. I respect your opinion and would not try to force you to carry a weapon, nor prevent you from finding your own solutions if any need finding.

CCW holders may be people who fear being mugged raped etc, and are simply finding their own solution to that fear (or paranoia). Many will hold the view that they refuse to be a victim, and yes there are some who hope to be mugged so they can blow the mugger away. There are bad apples in every level of society.

Enjoy Toronto's rising crime rate.
Of course Toronto has crime, its the 4th largest city in North America but your point about Toronto's crime rate is pointless. One example, last year Detroit had almost 400 murders (significantly lower from other years), Toronto which is almost 3 times the size of Detroit had 84 murders. All larger US cities have a considerably higher murder rate than Toronto. Clearly something wrong with the society south of the border. Not saying Toronto is perfect but for its size Toronto is very safe and our worst neigborhoods are considered to be decent in the US. So thankfully we here in Canada, Australia, western Europe, and Asia, do not feel the need to carry guns on us. Its very sad that you feel its neccessary to carry one. Probably the high crime rate is due to desperate measures to aquire funds to pay for medical insurance and bills because you guys are the only country in the world that does not have universal health care. Tell Bush to stop spending so much on military toys and start spending money on its own people, the results of that would be very rewarding.

Agreed.

Also the point needs to be made that not all crime involves guns.

Where campybob is located the majority of crimes may involve the use of guns.
But like Canada, we have little or no gun crime here.
That said gun ownership is only legal for those who have licences over here(tiny minority of people).

The only thing I carry with me when cycling is.............puncture repair kit/tyre levers/spanners in my saddle bag, and some water bottles in my waterbottle cage.

Re: Are cyclists that carry guns paranoid and insecure gun fanatics?

As a son of a police detective and working in my grandfather's gunsmith shop growing up I have always been around firearms since early childhood. I have a nice collection that I enjoy shooting at the range on occasion, but honestly even if someone were to break into my house I would get killed before I could dig one of my handguns out of the range bag.

I couldn't imagine carrying one of my 1911's on the bike. Especially when I do everything I can to lighten the load of my bike gear and bodyweight. I guess I am very grateful not to live in a bad place or in the state of paranoia. (it's the 51st state)

Besides, I would rather use a spoon. (comment from the Robin Hood movie)

By "Western", I assume that you are referring to "civilized"? Some people prefer the Nanny State but I don't. Therefore I vote for those that oppose it and vote against those that support it(If we were truly as horrible as the rest of the world makes us out to be, I would probably go out and shoot them). Social Welfare and "highly developed healthcare" appear to me to be more philosophically Eastern Bloc than Western, and we remember what became of the Eastern Bloc, don't we? I will agree that our Educational System was broke but attempts are being made to fix it. I really don't understand why you think there is something wrong with our correctional system. And the remark about our country being run by "religious nutters" is preposterous. If it were, abortion would be illegal, the Ten Commandments would be displayed in every public building, and we wouldn't have thousands of lawsuits filed each year over separation of church and state.

Since every Western Country has a comprehensive Health Care system and other social welfare measures, and the world's largest Communist country (China) does not...I think any reasonable person has to draw the conclusion that the US has more in common with Communist China than it does with the Western world!
