I wanna know if I should bust out the studded tires and which bike would be best, cross, mountian, or single.
Any info on this crucial equipment decision would be greatly appreciated.

They have a 10k and a 20k still pondering that one.

I have kinda been training for it by eating donuts and watching TV.
Also if you are in the Fargo area and want to ride with thats cool(so is the weather).
It seems I am the only one crazy enough and or dumb enough to attemp such foolishness .
But then again that was also said about the first mountain bike races, the first leadville 100, the first 24 hour race, you get my point.
Temperature should be around -3 degrees.
I guess there are a few things going on in Winnipeg that day so maybe Ill hangout. I doubt I will care much about the Superbowl thats going on that day.
Should be a fun race. Wow do I kick off my race season early.
You should feel like a slacker if you dont go.

It's sounds like your into a challenge. If that's the case you will LOVE this race! This has been a crazy cold winter so ensure you keep your fingers and toes warm, warm, warm.

People will be racing all three of the bikes you mentioned. I'm scared to offer a preference. Gears are handy "yes there are ups and downs" but with the single speed you can wear mitts! How's that for a switch in contemplating race strategy? :D

If your coming out from Fargo you've got to do the 20K. ;)

Thanks for your reply this sounds like good advice. I have some great socks and mitts for the event.
I have always enjoyed Winnipeg its a great city.
I needed an excuse to get out of town so this is my vacation until spring.
Anyway it ought to be a blast.

I think it's great that you're driving up for the event. There are several people from North Dakota and Minnesota that come out for that one. I hope the weather warms up a bit for the weekend. I'm guessing that people reading this are going to think that 10 or 20 km's for a race sounds just a little too simple, so I'd like to challenge them to try it out. ;)

Studded tires are optional but I know some guys are going to use them. There will be a mix of elite riders along with novice ones. Essentially it's just meant to be a fun event.

If you like crazy races, roughly the second weekend in July there is the second annual "Beach to Beach" race from Birds Hill (just northeast of the city) to Grand Beach (rated one of the top 10 beaches in North America by Playboy magazine!). It's 100 - 120 km of gravel roads and trails and it is a real challenge. However if you can enjoy the beach after that race is over, you're in better shape then I because it's just like a leg out of the Discovery Eco-Challenge.

Good luck in the race.

My experience in ice/snow riding is to deflate my 1.5 knobbies until I can feel the tire flatten a little when I put pressure on. I don't have studded tires... but I think they would probably be a good idea in a race.... any edge ya know... ; )

Riding in snow is like riding in sand. Put it in spin and float. ; ).... and DON"T lean.
