2004 Chorus or 2005 Ultegra?

Greetings, all. My very first post here, so please, be gentle. Or at least buy me a drink...

So, I picked up a new Ti road frame shortly before the holidays...a year-end closeout I just couldn't turn down.

Getting back to the road after a 15-year layoff, which has been spent on the MTB scene. 6' 1", 193#, 38. Not interested in crits, TTs, or racing in general. Between my wife and me, we have 3 businesses, and 2 young kids, so time is limited.

Looking for a reliable, strong, light-ise ride I can hop on and spin for an hour or two...get me away from the computer, get the blood flowing. Will still ride my MTBs (Ti hardtail and steel rigid SS), but supplement with road riding for variety and fitness.

On my MTBs, I primarily run XT, with a smattering of SRAM, XTR and Avid. I'm pretty big and strong, and can break parts.

Was originally set on '03 Chorus, but that's disappearing quickly. '04 Chorus seems a lot like '03 Record. Not intereseted in Dura-Ace...while I appreciate the technology and engineering that's gone into it, that '04 DA crank is butt-ugly to my eye. Certainly can't justify Record.

I know, logically, Ultegra will be everything I'd ever need, but conventional wisdom is that the '05 will get the DA treatment, on the crank, 10-spd, etc. It doesn't help that everyone and their dog uses Ultegra, and I admittedly like different stuff than the crowd...I'm just weird like that.

I'd be willing to wait on the '05 Ultegra if it's worth it. Heck, I've waited this long...or get '04 Chorus now. Anyone ever mix-and-match Shimano & Campy? Or is that bicycle blasphemy? How about '04 Chorus now, then '05 Ultegra crank/BB? What are the odds they'll play well together?

Anyone seen any spy photos or technical details about '05 Ultegra? I've heard the crank will be similar in design to DA, but toned down, looks-wise (thank God).

Thanks in advance.

You can mix some stuff.Canks are no problem. Why not just do centaur with maybe a crank upgrade?

I run DA brakes on my otherwise 2004 Record for two reasons: caliper release (Shimano) combined with braker lever release (Campy) lets me easily clean the brake pads during a latte step, and give me dual pivot calipers front and back. Brake pad grit destroys rims. The shoulders on many roads here are very gritty, and I want my Eurus wheelset to last a long time.

BTW, you ddin't mention wheelset, but take a look at the Campy Eurus. Compared to Aerohead/Volos (f/r) on my "might rain" road bike, the Eurus give me a full cog on the same roads, same conditions. They are amazing. 53/11 in places that are 53/12 with the Aerohead/Volos wheelset.

Well, if I go Campy, I'd go ahead and shoot the moon w/the Eurus wheels. If you're going to Rome, you might as well see the pope.

Otherwise, if I went Ultegra, I'd probably have John Kovachi of Kovachi Wheels build up a wheelset for me. I'm on my second set of MTB wheels from him in the past 10 years. If anything, he builds wheels too well.

speaking of mixing and matching, the campy wheels are available with a shimano compatible freehub body.

oh, and i agree with your assessment of the new DA crank. way too industrial for me.

Here is a link with a photo of the new Ultegra group;http://www.competitivecyclist.com/za/CCY?PAGE_NUM=4&PAGE=WHATS_NEW&PRSET_VERSION=084050. IMO Campy Chorus looks much better, but to each is their own. If the predictions come true about the major price increase with this group. It won't be much, if any, cheaper than Chorus. My own experience with Ultegra has been mixed, overall the quality was great for the price,(9 speed), but I've had problems with the shifters getting gummed up and not functioning, at least with Campy you can rebuild the unit. Cheers.
