training to strengthen a weak heart (help)

I'm an experienced RABGRAIer and touring cyclist and my girlfriend really wants to start going on rides with me. The problem is that she has eaten horribly all her life (very little food and very low in nutrients) and if very out of shape. Her weight is fine but she is very low in muscle and her heart is in bad shape because of it. We tried to go on a few rides but her heart started having problems after a few miles. We've consulted a doctor and was told that slow training on the bike (I have a fluid2 indoor trainer) should help strengthen the heart, as well as a better diet. I really think once she get in shape the problems will clear up.

My question is, what are good, easy training regiments for strengthening a bad, fast beating heart.

I would ask the doctor for his recomendations and use a HRM. Maybe a total of 3, 5 minute sessions a day at 50% max heart rate, spaced an hour or two apart, may be one he suggests & slowly increase the time and level of exertion. I would keep the riding restricted to the trainer for a while & make sure someone is around based on the info above.

Try walking and other exercise that gets her a little out of breath. Some people who have never exercised start panicing when they breath heavily, sweat or feel a strong heart beat in the chest. As they have never felt these sensations before they think that they are not normal!!!! By building up intesity and volume slowly she will get fit and learn that physical exertion is both normal and good fun!!!!

YOGA!

I can't stress enough how good yoga is for people who are in bad shape. If you've never done it before, you might not realize that it does raise your heart rate gently, and you do get a good workout from it. Additionally, yoga practice will improve your girlfriend's circulation which should ease her jumpy heart rate.

I used yoga after spending a year in bed due to illness and it did wonders for me on and off the bike.
