I'm planning on taking part in the "Bike The Drive" event
in Chicago on May 30th. This is when they shut down Lake Shore Drive to cars and open it up to nothing but bikes. I'm wondering if anyone here has taken part in it the past two to three years, and if so, what are your thoughts / comments on it. AJC |

It's fun. Lots of bikes. Don't plan on setting any speed
records. Enjoy a casual ride. Joel AmericanFlyer64 wrote: >I'm planning on taking part in the "Bike The Drive" event >in Chicago on May 30th. Why not just bike the Lake Shore bike path when it's not so crowded? Unless
you're looking to be part of a "happening," it seems to be the bike path itself would be a much more enjoyable ride -- and much closer to the water, too. I did the Chicago Lake Shore Drive in June 2002 in the
evenings. Very busy with joggers and bicyclist. Gets quiet after dark. NYRides wrote: > > Why not just bike the Lake Shore bike path when it's not > so crowded? All the Freds are busy clogging up LSD. We're planning on riding the Fox River Trail up to the Wisconsin border that day. :-) John Everett - Aurora, Illinois jeverett3<AT>earthlink<DOT>net http://home.earthlink.net/~jeverett3 |

Lots of fun, it is a happening! Funny thing is - it's hillier than you would expect! Refreshments, lots of good company. Webpage at http://www.bikethedrive.org/ - you can sign up there too. Suggestion: ride one way on the drive, but then return on the path along the lake front. Bob Kastigar R-Kastigar<AT>neiu.edu http://www.neiu.edu/~rastiga |

At $35.00, Bike the Drive is a big rip-off. If you decide
to do the ride, I'd suggest pirating it. Bring your own water and snacks, don't stop at the Chicago Bike Federation's sags. It's a public thoroughfare so it's ok to ride on the street. Which does a lot of good for cyclists - all cyclists - even those who don't pony up their fair share of support. Bob Kastigar http://www.neiu.edu/~rkastiga |
