Default road derailleur on MTB

I just put an ultegra 12-27T cassette on a lightweight XC mountain bike I'm building.

Help me out with picking a rear derailleur.

1) Will an XTR SGS (Long Cage) derailleur be goofy jue to the long cage on a small cassette?

2) What are the pros and cons to putting on an ultegra triple rear derailleur? Does anybody have experience? Will a road derailleur stand up to a little off-road grime and rough love?
