Default axels

Hi,
I am in the planing stages for a recumbent trike and was wondering what people are doing about axels, does 3/8 inch fine thread usually do the trick or is there a better way - I am planing to use stock wheels from donor bikes
I need to manufacture one axel and also a jackshaft from a hub cut in half

any advise is wellcome

thanks
