Hey folkses, Well, this last Saturday morning, we awoke to a
depressed and worried looking terrier. Never mind that she always looks like that, this time it seems she had some cause - we found a rather large tic (about 10mm long by about 5mm wide) hanging off her 'nose', just below her eyes, in the middle. There'd been no sign of it the day before at all, yet we hadn't been anywhere that there were tics that we could recall. So, we tried the cigarette trick, with little success. In the end, we just carefully worked it out with tweezers, then applied tea tree oil, and she seemed somewhat happier. It was about this point, we remembered that we'd been to The Lakes the previous Sunday, Kath and the dog walking while Steve, Mike and I rode - dog musta picked it up then, running through the ferns around the sheep fields, and it must have been looking for a good spot upon which to feed, then found it and swelled up virtually overnight. We checked her over further, and couldn't find any more...until Sunday! - Yup, found another on her upper chest, same size. This one, not being near her eyes, and it being easier to hold her body still than her head, we treated to a blast from my blow-torch lighter, until it started frothing and oozing from its rear, then we easily pulled it out cleanly with the tweezers. The dog now was positively ecstatic and did a little dance for us around the house (silly dog!). She's been very affectionate ever since, bless! Needless to say, Kath and I did complete skin searches on each other to see if we had any on us - we didn't, but it sure as hell was fun anyhow! So Spadie, you find any tics burrowed in you anywhere then? ',;~}~ Cheers! Shaun aRe - Not gonna hide behind ferns to piss ever again! |

Apparently you should grip them by their head, being careful bot to squeeze their abdomen, then twist them off. > So Spadie, you find any tics burrowed in you > anywhere then? Hold on, back in a bit. Been warned by the vets that this can still leave bits of them in there, which can cause an infection? Anyhow, the second one came off really easy once I'd scorched the sucker some ',;~}~ > > So Spadie, you find any tics burrowed in you > > anywhere then? > > Hold on, back in a bit. Take yer time! Some years we have a lot of ticks around here. I've come a cross a couple this year, but some years I'd find a few per ride on my legs or shoes. "They" say the burning thing isn't the right way anymore, and as Steve said you just need to grip the disgusting little buggers by the head with tweezers to extract them. The "tick search" has been a favorite post-ride ritual of the misses and I for years! Kind of ruins the moment if we come across one though... Matt |

A cotton ball soaked in ammonia makes them come out of your skin very quick. Yes, it burns a little, but the little buggers come out whole and alive. -- o-o-o-o Ride-A-Lot o-o-o-o www.schnauzers.ws |
