In my parts bin, I've got several miscellaneous bottom- bracket parts: cups, caged bearings, & spindles. So long as I can get the cups to thread properly onto the the frame, can I just use whichever spindle with whichever pair of cups, & then use whichever pair of bearings? The only thing I foresee being a problem would be the chainline for any given crankset. On another related note, can I use whichever square tapered crank on whichever square tapered spindle? The parts in question are from the early 90's or before. Thanks! Phil |

Also, the bearing ridges on the different spindles may be spaced differently. They tend to be farther apart on French and Italian stuff. This will affect the available thread engagement of the adjustable cup and lockring. However, I strongly advise against the use of caged bearings with fewer than 11 balls. Loose is better. > > On another related note, can I use whichever square > tapered crank on whichever square tapered spindle? Yes, again subject to the caveat that chainline may get funky. You might find this useful: http://sheldonbrown.com/bbsize Some people make a big deal out of the slight thickness/length difference between ISO and JIS spindles, but in my experience this is rarely a serious problem in practice.
