Default Ferrules?

I just built up a frame and forgot to use the cable-end
(brake/shifter) ferrules that were sitting on my workbench.
Are ferrules really necessary? Should I release all the
cables and install the ferrules now? Appreciate any advice.
The bike is braking and shifting fine without them.
