We are relocating to Perth shortly. Are there suburbs which are more bike friendly than others ?

Yes,
Contacr BikeWest: http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/cycling/ Ask them to send you a set of Perth Cycling Maps, they are free to some overseas "visitors". (we pay $5 each). Try to locate yourself on major cycleway if you can.

I find any of the western suburbs to be a bit more bike friendly than others. Also anywhere near the Swan River will generally have a pretty established bikepath system and/or quiet roads. Avoid the eastern suburbs where V8's and semi trailers rule!

Any suburb around the Swan River is fine. I would pick a suburb between Belmont and Fremantle.

Ohh and another question...
Are there any mass participation events in Perth, something like the Argus in Cape Town. I would like to compete, however I am probably the cycling equivalent to what golfers would call a "weekend hacker". So not really interested in the really professional stuff. and one more.... Where are the good mountian bike spots and good road riding for that matter. I have been in Kings Park and did the rides round the river. Is there rides that take you into the country side (without getting run over ?) Leon |

Welcome to Perth Leon,
There aren't too many 'mass participation' events in Perth. There was one recently, The Great Perth Bike Ride which was a 50km loop and raised money for a charity. There are a heap of good MTB'ing spots in Perth. There is a whole network of trails in the Kalamunda/Mundaring region as well as XC race courses. Most of the riding spots are within an hours drive from Perth City. There are other races and tracks in the south west such as Margaret River, and my favourite, Northcliffe. There is also the Munda Biddi trail (have a look at the other thread). The traffic situation in Perth is not as bad as other cities, so you can road ride pretty much anywhere (relatively) safely. Zano, you must ride in the wrong places then, or you are good at pissing them off somehow. Sure, I have had the odd car cut in front of me, but who hasn't, even when you're driving your car? Never had any dramas with people throwing things at me, and the cops.. they give me the occasional smile as I ride on past (and yes, I ride without bells, and reflectors) Of course some suburbs are better than others, and I have managed to find several round-trip loops which are 80% on road and have never had a problem. If you ride through 'notorious' suburbs, then you are asking for trouble. A lot of the major roads are now being built with bike lanes on the side. Yes, cycleways are much safer.... besides every other pedestrian crossing onto the other side of the cycleway as you pass them to "smell the flowers" on the other side, but cycleways don't deliver you to your destination. We are lucky in Perth as it is relatively bike friendly compared to other cities. If I could get a dollar for every (cycling) visitor who wishes they could live here because the roads are much safer.... |

Tell us about your favourite ride/loop. On the road or off the road.
I think I will go and try some of those MTB trails this weekend. Leon |

Hi Leon,
Some road loops that I do are: from Claremont area, out to Freo (Stirling Bridge), through Applecross to Canning Bridge, down to Mt Henry Bridge, Freeway to Narrows Bridge and then either back along the river to Claremont, or depending on time etc, can also go through South Perth to the causeway and then back along the river. This can be alternated by either taking the road along the beach to Freo, or through Mosman Park. The Mosman Park way (basically following the river) has some good hills in it. Another one is to head towards the city, either take freeway or Labouchere Rd to Mt Henry Bridge, and then continue around the river taking you towards Manning/Shelley Bridge. These are all south rides, and you are in the north. You can do a loop from hillarys, go up the road at the big roundabout (forgot the name) that takes you to the freeway, get onto the bike path and head up to Joondalup, and then work your way down to the osborne park/wembley area, cut back across to the coast (will put you near the Rendevous hotel) and then back up the coast to Hillary's. A loop like that is probably around 55-60km. In regards to MTB places, where can I start... Langford Park in Jarrahdale is excellent, as it is almost impossible to get lost, but is pretty much flat. there is a whole network of trails that join together so you could spend all day there and ride the stuff once. there was a recent 12Hr night challenge there (2 weekends ago). That could be a good loop to start with, approx 12km, is still marked out, and has been ridden in well from the 12Hr. Other places to go are Dwellingup (Turner Hill off Scarp Rd, and there is another one near the old POW camp... both trails marked). There is also a plethora of trails out in the Mundaring/Bickley/Pickering Brook area. HTH |
